Hodgins' Record-Setting Day Paces Broncos Into Semis

LAS VEGAS -Â "Big Game Braydey" proved that her pivotal run at last year's Mountain West Tournament wasn't a one-time show, as Monday afternoon junior guard Braydey Hodgins opened the 2019 Air Force Reserve Mountain West Championship with a record-setting 37 points in top-seeded Boise State's 72-67 quarterfinal victory over No. 8 Nevada at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
The Broncos (26-4), who set a program record with their 26th win of the season, will face fourth-seeded Fresno State in Tuesday's semifinals at 7 p.m. MT (6 p.m. PT).
Hodgins' 37 points set the Mountain West Tournament's single-game scoring mark, eclipsing the 17-year-old record of 36 held by UNLV's Constance Jinks. Hodgins also tied the conference tournament single-game records for free throws made (14) and attempted (15). For the day, Hodgins went 10-for-18 from the field including 3-for-8 from deep, and passed out four assists.
"[It] doesn't mean anything personally. I just want to win this thing do it next to people like Riley and all of our other teammates that we just have such a great bond," Hodgins said about her career night. "And no matter who is performing we're all happy for them. Luckily it was me today, but tomorrow it might be someone else and we just have to prepare for that."
The Broncos (26-4) would need every one of Hodgins' points and assists Monday, as eighth-seeded Nevada (12-19) refused to go away all game, taking a seven-point second-quarter lead, then erasing an 11-point Bronco lead with an 11-0 run to tie it up at 67-67 with 2:03 to play. For the game, Boise State overcame Nevada shooting 50.0 percent from the field and out-rebounding the Broncos, 38-26.
"I thought we could have broke them if we could have secured a rebound. And we did not secure the rebound and they went and scored," Boise State head coach Gordy Presnell said about the frantic final six minutes. "We went down, took a quick shot, and they went back and hit a 3. And all of a sudden the momentum changed."
"[We're] fortunate we made plays, and fortunate to have two players like [Braydey Hodgins and Riley Lupfer] that are next to me that made plays as well. We're pleased with the victory and happy to move on," Presnell added. Â
Boise State, though, locked in over the final 2:03, forcing turnovers on each of the next two Wolf Pack possessions then three misses from Nevada shooters over the final 22 seconds. An offensive rebound from Hodgins led to freshman Rachel Bowers drawing a foul and hitting one of two from the line to put the Broncos up, 68-67, with 1:32 to go. Bowers then denied a Nevada pass inside, creating a turnover when the loose ball went out of bounds off of the leg of the Wolf Pack's Emma Torbert.
A'Shanti Coleman, however, missed two free throws after a Nevada foul with 46.2 seconds to play, giving Nevada another shot at a go-ahead bucket. But again, the Boise State defense stepped up, forcing Essence Booker to throw away an off-target pass. Hodgins was fouled on the ensuing inbounds, and hit both free throws to get the Bronco lead to three with 22 seconds to go, followed by a missed jumper from Nevada's Jade Redmon.
Marta Hermida grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and hit both free throws with 11.0 seconds on the clock to ice the game for Boise State.
Redmon was a huge factor for the Wolf Pack, scoring six points in Nevada's game-tying 11-0 run and finishing with 25 on 11-for-15 shooting.
The teams were knotted at 13-13 after the opening quarter, before Redmon hit a pair of jumpers and Camariah King hit a 3-pointer to put the Wolf Pack up 22-15 just 2:32 into the frame. Boise State recovered from its cold stretch, outscoring the Wolf Pack, 24-15, over the rest of the frame, to take a 39-37 lead at the break. Hodgins scored 15 of her 20 first-half points over this stretch, getting the Broncos back to even at 35-35 with a triple from the wing two minutes from the break. The Pasco, Wash., native continued driving inside on the Wolf Pack, drawing yet another foul with 11 seconds left and hitting the free throws that accounted for the two-point Boise State lead.
Boise State looked to have taken control halfway through the third quarter, as a triple from Riley Lupfer, and buckets from Hodgins and Jayde Christopher sparked a quick 7-0 run that forced a Nevada timeout with 5:24 left and the Broncos up 52-45. The teams seesawed the rest of the frame, with Boise State leading 58-52 heading into the fourth.
Nevada got to within four at 58-54, but Hodgins scored seven points over a 9-2 Bronco run, capping it with a three-point play with 5:58 to go in the game to give Boise State the 67-56 lead.
"Braydey is an exceptional player and has this ability to play in pressure situations and excel," said Presnell.
Boise State would finish the game shooting 38.6 percent, with Lupfer adding nine on three 3-pointers, and Bowers and Christopher each adding seven.
