Broncos Drop Game One to UNLV

LAS VEGAS – The No. 24 Boise State softball team dropped the opening game of the series to UNLV, 8-1 at Eller Media Softball Stadium. The loss ends the program's best winning streak at 17 games.
The Broncos (18-3, 0-1 MW) scored only once in the game on a RBI double from Jessica McKay. The junior outfielder hit the team's first extra-base hit into right center in the top of the sixth inning to get Ashlyn Adams across the plate from first base.
Despite receiving her first loss of the season, Kelsey Broadus was able to strike out six batters on the night. The left-hander allowed only two walks in the game.
UNLV scored in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Mia Trejo. The Rebels (20-5, 1-0) added three more runs in the bottom of the third on a three-run home run from Trejo.
A bases-clearing single in the top of the sixth from Justine Federe put UNLV up 8-1. Veronica Lynch, pitching in relief, induced the final out of the inning on a fly ball to Kora Wade in center field.
Needing to score seven runs in the top of the seventh to extend the game, Boise State was able to load the bases with two outs. However, the Broncos were charged a final out for not correctly re-entering a substitution.
Karlee Johnson led the Broncos at the plate, finishing the night 2-for-3, while Rebekah Cervantes went 2-for-4.
Boise State will look to even the series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT.
