FINAL RESULTS
PROVO, Utah – The 13th-ranked Boise State gymnastics team, even without its most-decorated gymnast in school history, captured a fifth-consecutive Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championship Friday at the Marriott Center, recording a 196.950 – more than a full point clear of No. 24 Southern Utah (195.900).
No. 15 BYU (195.570) finished third and Utah State (193.800) finished fourth.
Junior Courtney McGregor (39.475) and senior Sarah Means (39.375) finished as the meet's top-two all-arounders, while freshman Alexis Stokes captured the evening's bars championship with a stellar 9.950 and junior Isabella Amado tied for the title on beam with a 9.900.
"I couldn't have dreamed about a five-peat three years ago," co-head coach Tina Bird said. "When you work hard and stay humble, this is the result. I'm proud of every single member of this team, but our season isn't over yet. This was only one of our goals – we're going to enjoy it, but we're not finished."
The gymnastics team's fifth-consecutive championship is the first for a Boise State program since the football team won five-straight Western Athletic Conference Championships from 2002-06. It is also just the fourth time in school history one of the Broncos' athletic programs has accomplished the feat.
The Broncos, wearing shirts during pre-meet warm-ups that read #DoItForShani, were without senior Shani Remme, who suffered a season-ending injury at the mid-point of this season. Remme, the reigning two-time MRGC Gymnast of the Year and the conference's 2016 Freshman of the Year, had already set Boise State's career record for all-around (21) and beam (23) victories.
Even in her absence, a fifth-straight conference title would not slip through the Broncos' fingers.
Boise State led for the entirety of the meet, setting and tying the all-time conference record on bars and beam, respectively, en route to the third-highest score at a conference meet in school history. The team's bars score of 49.475 eclipsed a record that had been established in 2016 (49.450) and was matched the following season, and tonight's beam score of 49.350 tied a mark that was set in 2017.
Individually, Stokes' championship performance on bars was one of three by the Broncos at 9.925 or higher in the event. Hers ranked tied for the second-highest score at a conference championship in school history, while McGregor and sophomore Emily Muhlenhaupt each posted 9.925s, tied for the sixth-highest scores at a league championship by a Bronco.
Amado (9.900) tied for the beam title, a score that also ranks tied for sixth at a conference championship all-time.
On vault, McGregor and Means each posted 9.850s to lead the team, while the duo and senior Alex Esmerian also posted 9.850s on floor, team highs.
Boise State will now await its destination for the 2019 NCAA Regional Championships – either Corvallis, Ore., Ann Arbor, Mich., Athens, Ga., or Baton Rouge, La. Regionals is scheduled for April 4-6, and the postseason selection show is scheduled for Monday, March 25.
