The Boise State women's golf team had their best finish at a conference tournament since 2014, led by a T-6th effort from Tara Finigan
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif – The Boise State women's golf team finished the 2019 Mountain West Conference Championship in sixth place – the best finish for Boise State in the conference championship since matching that result in 2014. The Broncos score of 931 (313-310-308, + 67) is the ninth-lowest at a conference tournament in school history.
Senior Tara Finigan held steady in the top ten throughout the entire tournament. She birdied six times in the third round, giving her a total of 10 birdies for the tournament. She tied for third in the field in overall birdies. She made her moves on the par-5s of the course, averaging 4.75 strokes. Finigan shot 225 (74-76-75, +9) and finished in a tie for sixth. Her 54-hole score is tied for the fourth-lowest score at a conference championship in school history.
Her tie for sixth place is the best individual finish at a conference championship for Boise State since the program joined the Mountain West in the 2011-12 season. It is also the best by a Bronco since Mandi Hedberg finished tied for fourth at the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Championships, and is tied for the sixth-best individual performance at a conference tournament in school history.
"I'm proud of how this time fought hard all year and never gave up," Nicole Bird, Boise State head coach said. "They accomplished so much this season and broke a lot of school records. They have a lot to be proud of. We will really miss our seniors, and we're thankful for all they've taught the younger golfers in the program. This isn't how we wanted to finish, but we are going to focus on the positives and move forward."
Lexi Perry and Valentine Lacaze both finished in a tie for 22nd. Perry finished tied for third in the field in par-3 scoring for the tournament – with an average of 3.08 strokes. She shot 235 (81-75-79, +19) on the week. Lacaze shot rounds of 78-79-78 to join Perry in the top 25.
Nicole Suppelsa led the team in pars, making 33 in the tournament. She saved her best round for last, firing a 76 on Wednesday to end with a 236 (80-80-76, +20). She finished in a tie for 25th to round out the scoring for Boise State.
Kinsley Bonfilio rounded out the lineup for the Broncos with a score of 245 (81-83-81, +29).
Boise State will now await word on whether they will receive a bid to an NCAA Regional event. The field will be announced with the 2019 NCAA Women's Golf Selection Show, April 24, at 2:30 p.m. MT.
