Ohlinger records first career double-double on 18 kills and 10 digs to lead Boise State.
PROVO, Utah - Freshman Lauren Ohlinger's double-double on 18 kills and 10 digs led Boise State to its first victory of the season as the Broncos defeated Utah Valley 3-1 (25-21, 27-25, 26-28, 25-14) Saturday afternoon at the BYU Nike Invitational.Â
Boise State controlled the first two sets then let the third get away from it after having a couple match points for the win. However, the Blue and Orange put that disappointment behind them and took out their frustration in the fourth as they rolled to a decisive 11-point win in the fourth to put the match away. Â
Â
"I'm proud of the effort today versus a very good Utah Valley team," said Boise State head coach Shawn Garus. "The bounce-back in set four after failing to capitalize on a couple match points in set three showed a lot of toughness. I thought that both middles (middle blockers) Jessica (Donahue) and Alyssa (Wissinger) were a force at the net to help balance our attack. I'm excited to get back to practice and build on this weekend."
In addition to Ohlinger's first career double-double to lead the Broncos, senior Janell Walley also had an impressive outing collecting 13 kills, a team-high three services aces, nine digs and a team-best (tied) seven blocks.Â
Sophomore outside hitter Shae Duffy had her best match in the blue and orange with a career-high 11 kills to go with four digs and three blocks.Â
Matching Ohlinger with a double-double was sophomore setter Danielle Boss who distributed a season-high 46 assists and had 10 digs.Â
Boise State finished the BYU Nike Invitational at 1-2 overall. Next up for the Broncos is the Thunderbird Classic at Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah, next weekend where they will face Middle Tennessee State, Saint Mary's (Calif.) and SUU.
