Broncos Continue Record Start to Season

9/15/2019 5:57:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State continued it's historic start to the 2019 season with a 2-0 victory over the Portland State Vikings, Sunday at the Boas Sports Complex. The Broncos are now 6-1 to begin the season eclipsing last season's squad which started the season 5-2.

It was an abnormally warm day in Boise for a September match which required two hydration breaks, Sunday. Head coach Jim Thomas leaned on his bench heavily, playing 22 of his 29 players.

"We gave the people who were really, really good in the first half an opportunity to extend their minutes in the second half," said Thomas "That's what you have to do when you have squad, it doesn't matter if you are a starter or first off the bench, you have to respond."

The Broncos ripped off 26 shots to the Vikings'  12. However, it was the offensive firepower of Aubree Chatterton and Raimee Sherle who secured victory for the Broncos.

After a scoreless first half, Chatterton broke the deadlock in the 65th minute off a feed by fellow senior Kristina Serres. The goal is Chatterton's third of the season and second of the weekend.

Senior Raimee Sherle netted her fifth goal of the season thanks to a shot that just curved left of the outstretched keepers gloves. The goal would give the Broncos some in insurance in the 82nd minute.

"It felt really good, as soon as it came off my foot I knew it was headed right for the upper corner," said Sherle.

Keeper Sydney Smith made easy work of her sixth win of the year recording two saves including a leaping punch over the bar. She now has five shutouts this season to lead the Mountain West. Smith also holds the highest save percentage in the conference.

The Broncos prepare for the final weekend of nonconference play with a split weekend beginning with a home match against North Dakota Sept. 20, followed by a trip to Cedar City, Utah, to take on the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. MT.
