FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Junior Lexi Perry fired a pair of even-par 72s to finish the first day of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic tied for second on the individual leaderboard, just a stroke off the lead. Perry (72-72=144) and Northern Colorado's Abbi Fleiner (76-68=144) trail New Mexico State's Dominique Galloway (75-68=143) heading into Tuesday's final round, which begins with a 9 a.m. MT shotgun start.
The El Dorado Hills, Calif., native spearheaded a Boise State effort which had the Broncos in seventh place at +34 (306-304=610) after the opening two rounds. Fellow junior Nicole Suppelsa bounced back from an opening-round 79 to fire a 1-over 73 in the afternoon, finishing the day tied for 27th at +8 (79-73=152).
Perry got to 1-under with a birdie on the opening hole of her second round, at the Par-3 No. 4. Three-straight bogeys on Nos. 8-10 put her two-over, but three birdies against just one bogey over her final 11 holes, with two of the birdies coming on Par-5s (Nos. 16 and 2), brought her back to even and just a stroke off the pace.Â
"Lexi is playing so well right now. She's been patient, hitting good shots, and taking advantage of birdie opportunities," said Boise State head coach Nicole Bird.
"Nicole struggled with her putting today, but her ball-striking was fantastic," Bird continued. " If we can get her putting back on track, I think she has the ability to go real low."
Senior Valentine Lacaze (75-81=156) sat tied for 36th after the first day, with freshman Taylor Koch (80-78=158) tied for 44th and sophomore Cora Mickelsen (83-83=166) rounding out the Bronco quintet. Boise State heads into Tuesday's final round with a shot at a top-four performance, trailing fourth-place Wyoming by just nine strokes. New Mexico State leads the field at +13 (298-291=589).
"As a team we had a bit of a slow start, like the first tournament. We were able to get back on track after a few holes and do a lot better," Bird said. " We need to get going from the start tomorrow, and we'll have a chance to climb the leaderboard."
