SAN JOSE, Calif. –
The Boise State gymnastics team, ranked No. 21 in Road to Nationals, set a season high with a 195.525 Sunday at the Provident Credit Union Event Center, sweeping a tri-meet at San Jose State (194.675) that also featured Seattle Pacific (191.575), the Broncos' first victories of the 2020 season.

The tri-meet was the Broncos' third-straight on the road to open the year, having already squared off in top-25 showdowns at No. 3 UCLA and No. 24 Washington.

Boise State boasted the highest team scores on vault (48.700), bars (49.375) and floor (48.875) against the Spartans and Falcons, and juniors Gabriela Bouza and Emily Muhlenhaupt claimed event titles on vault and bars, respectively. Bouza scored a 9.825 en route to her first-career vault title, and Muhlenhaupt matched her career high with a near-perfect 9.975, recording her second-straight bars victory and the fourth of her career.

"Even though I don't believe the scores truly reflected our performance, I thought we had a great meet," head coach Tina Bird said. "We were awesome on bars and I thought everyone really stepped up on floor. I am incredibly proud of everyone."

Bars, an event in which Boise State ranks fourth nationally, was once again the strength of the team, but floor, which had been the Achilles' heel to this point in the season, turned out to be the team's second-highest-scoring event.

The Broncos' bars line-up has been playing with fire, putting only five gymnasts up in each of the first three meets of the season. But once again, it didn't matter, as Muhlenhaupt, redshirt junior Maddi Nilson (9.900) and junior Tatum Bruden (9.850) either tied or set career highs in the final rotation. Bouza and sophomore Hope Masiado each added 9.825s, and the Broncos established a season high with a 49.375.

For Nilson, it was the first 9.900 score in any event to date in her career.

"Emily's bars routine, getting another 10.0 from a judge, was exciting," Bird said. "But one of my highlights was definitely Maddi earning a 9.900."

The Broncos' 48.875 on floor was their highest score of the season in the event, thanks to a trio of 9.800s from freshman Adriana Popp, senior Isabella Amado and Bruden. Popp established a career high in the event, as did sophomore Samantha Smith (9.725).

Popp also tied for the team high on beam – with Masiado – in the Broncos' first rotation (9.750). The Broncos' solid start in the event (48.575) assured a wire-to-wire victory, as Boise State led after every rotation.

On vault, Bouza led Boise State for the second time in three meets in 2020, and the Broncos concluded with a team score of 48.700.

Boise State, now 2-2 on the year, will host 15th-ranked BYU in its first home meet of the season Friday (Jan. 31). The Broncos and Cougars are slated to begin their Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference showdown at 7 p.m. at ExtraMile Arena.
