Alston, Broncos Cruise to First Win

FORT WORTH, Texas - Boise State men's basketball picked up its first win of the season in emphatic fashion Sunday, beating Sam Houston State 86-55 in the Southwest Showcase at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. Derrick Alston, Jr. led the Broncos with 27 points.
Boise State (1-1) went on a 14-3 run early in the first half to open up a 20-10 lead with 11:22 to play in the opening period. The Broncos took a 15-point advantage into the break and never looked back.
Alston shot 7-for-16 from the floor, 9-of-9 from the free throw line and made four three-pointers to shake off a scoreless performance in the season opener Friday. The preseason Mountain West Player of the Year had 17 points by halftime.
Defense helped Boise State extend the lead in the second half. The Broncos held the Bearkats (0-3) without a field goal for nearly seven minutes as they rattled off a 16-1 run to go up 79-46 with 4:42 remaining.
Marcus Shaver, Jr. was Boise State's second-leading scorer for the second time in as many games. Shaver finished with 18 points, six rebounds and two steals.
The Broncos had four scorers in double figures as RayJ Dennis chipped in 13 points and Abu Kigab contributed 11. Dennis led the way with seven assists.
The Broncos return home to open Mountain West play Thursday and Saturday, against New Mexico.
