Broncos Hold Off Air Force Rally

2/12/2020 8:28:00 PM | Women's Basketball

USAFA, Colo. - Boise State survived a furious Air Force comeback attempt Wednesday night, seeing an 18-point lead evaporate but finding enough in the tank to hold off the Falcons, 74-69.

Boise State (17-9, 9-5 MW) led 52-34 with 4:36 left in the third quarter, but Air Force refused to capitulate. Allyah Marlett scored seven points as the Falcons closed the quarter on a 12-4 run, then an 11-3 run to start the fourth pulled Air Force (5-19, 3-10 MW) to within two at 59-57.

Briana Autrey tied it up at 61-61 with 4:37 to play, but Riley Lupfer answered for the Broncos, hitting her sixth 3-pointer of the game, highlighting a 23-point night and getting the Broncos up three. Air Force missed its chance to take the lead with 3:26 left as Emily Conroe missed both free throws with the Broncos holding on to a one-point lead.

From there, the Broncos closed it out as A'Shanti Coleman scored seven of Boise State's final 11 points.

Boise State shot 66.7 percent from the field, including a 6-for-8 showing behind the arc, over the opening 20 minutes, with Lupfer scoring 14 points and going going 4-for-5 from 3-point range, while Mallory McGwire added 12 points en route to a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double.

For the game, the Broncos shot 54.7 percent and were 10-for-22 from 3-point range.

The Broncos opened the game on a 7-0 run and got the lead to 16-2 to force an Air Force timeout with 4:28 to go in the first quarter. Lupfer and Jayde Christopher had five points apiece, and McGwire four in the opening burst, which continued after the timeout as Lupfer drained two more triples to push the Bronco lead to 16 at 22-6.

The Broncos opened the second quarter with a bucket to push the lead to 16 before Air Force (5-19, 3-10 MW) made a brief run of its own. Kaelin Immel scored nine points and Riley Snyder eight over a 19-9 Falcon run that trimmed the Bronco lead to six at 35-29 two minutes to the break. Snyder would lead the Falcons with 25 points Wednesday, with Immel finishing with 18.

But Boise State responded, as Lupfer hit her fourth 3-pointer of the half and McGwire added a bucket in the final minute to put the Broncos in front 40-29 at halftime.

Christopher would grab a piece of Boise State history in the second quarter, finding McGwire for a bucket inside and her 193rd assist of the campaign, setting the program single-season record previously held by Yaiza Rodriguez (192, 2016-17).
