Boise State Baseball Returns on Historic Night

2/21/2020 10:15:00 PM | Baseball

AUSTIN, Texas – It was a night of firsts for Boise State, but the Broncos are still seeking their first win after a 7-0 setback at No. 22 Texas.

Playing their first game in 40 years against the most-storied program in college baseball history, the Broncos fell behind 2-0 in the first inning and were limited to four hits by the a trio of Longhorn hurlers.

Starting pitcher Travis Weston (0-1) gave up two runs and had a runner on third three batters into the game, but showed signs of good things to come when he struck out a pair and induced a pop up to end the inning.

The Broncos mounted a threat in the next half inning against Texas (6-0) starter Bryce Elder (2-0) when Torin Montgomery walked and Joe Yorke singled to open the frame. However, the Broncos came up empty as the next-three hitters were retired.

Texas added a run in the fourth against Weston and tacked on one more against reliever Wesley Harper to go up 4-0. Harper settled in and set down the final-seven men he faced to keep the game close.

The Longhorns put the game out of reach with three runs in the eighth on two hits and three walks against relieve Ike Buxton.

"It was an honor and an awesome opportunity for our guys tonight," Boise State head coach Gary Van Tol said. "Pitching is ahead of hitting at this time of year and it showed. We played well defensively and outside of one inning, did a pretty good job on the mound."

Van Tol added, "This was our first real measuring stick and we have a better idea of where we stack up. We have a chance to come out tomorrow and improve on this first game."

The middle game of the three-game series begins Saturday at 1 p.m.
