RIO VERDE, Ariz. - Freshman Taylor Koch shot an even-par 72 to pace Boise State in the opening round of the Rio Verde Invitational on the White Wing Course at Rio Verde Country Club. The Broncos closed the first round tied for sixth in the 18 team field with a team score of 307 (+19).
Koch is tied for third with four other golfers on the individual leaderboard, just one stroke back of co-leaders Grayson Gladden of Arkansas State and Elizabeth Win of Seton Hall. The Puyallup, Wash., native had four birdies, four bogeys, and 10 pars on the day, and did well to play the final 15 holes at a 2-under clip after opening with bogeys on her first and third holes of the day.
Starting on No. 14, Koch was 2-over through three before needing just three holes to get back to even, carding birdies on Nos. 17 and 1. After six-straight pars, she yo-yoed between 1-under and even with a birdie-bogey-birdie-bogey sequence on Nos. 8-11.
"Taylor played really well today and I'm very proud of how she hung in there. This course sets up really well for her game." said Boise State head coach Nicole Bird.
Joining Koch in the top echelon of the leaderboard was junior Lexi Perry, who finished the day four strokes off the pace with a 3-over 75. Senior Valentine Lacaze closed the opening round at 79, while junior Nicole Suppelsa shot an 81 and redshirt senior Ivane Helias finished at 83.
At +19, Boise State sits tied for sixth with Missouri State, 10 strokes behind early leader Xavier (297) and just five back of third-place Northern Illinois.
"It was good to finally get back competing today. The team overall played pretty solid," Bird said. "We had some good holes but there's also room for improvement. Tomorrow we are expecting some rain and wind so it's going to be more of a course-management issue. We will plan for that tonight and hope for the best tomorrow."
The Broncos will tee off in Saturday's second round before finishing up tournament action Sunday.
