ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -Â A 52-30 second half margin and a season-high 95 points in Saturday's 95-76 win at New Mexico may just have everyone convinced that Boise State is in the midst of another of its patented late-season runs.
Five Broncos scored in double figures for the second-straight game, point guard Jayde Christopher notched her second double-double in as many games with 14 points and 10 assists, and A'Shanti Coleman and Riley Lupfer finished with 20 points apiece in Boise State's fourth-straight win.
With a win in its regular-season finale Monday night against UNLV, Boise State (20-9, 12-5 MW) can clinch the No. 2 seed at March 1-4's Mountain West Tournament. The Broncos on Saturday also notched their fourth-straight 20-win season, and fifth in the last six years.
"I thought we struggled throughout the year with maintaining leads and sustaining that down the stretch, and I thought today was the best we've played down the stretch," said Boise State head coach Gordy Presnell. "Our seniors have never won in The Pit, and I thought they were all fired up going in. Everyone contributed, it was just a really good game for the Broncos."Â Â Â
Trailing 46-43 at the break, Lupfer started the second-half push with a 3-pointer 13 seconds in, and another just over a minute later to put Boise State ahead, 53-50, and prompt a New Mexico timeout. The Broncos opened the second half 6-for-7 from the field, maintaining the three-point lead at 57-54, before taking off.
New Mexico (14-15, 5-11 MW) went just 4-for-14 and scored just 12 points over the final 7:30 of the third quarter, while the Broncos surged in the opposite direction, going 7-for-12 from the field and outscoring the Lobos, 16-12, over the span.
Buckets from Ahlise Hurst and Jordan Hosey pulled the Lobos to within a point at 71-70 to start the fourth quarter, but Boise State quickly slammed the lid on any hopes, as Christopher scored five-straight points during a 14-2 run which put the Broncos firmly in control at 85-72 with 6:17 to play.
The lead got to as many as 22 following a 3-pointer from Lupfer, who finished 6-for-10 from deep, a bucket by Coleman, and another triple from Christopher, putting the Broncos up, 95-73, with just over a minute to go. On the defensive end, the Broncos held New Mexico to 4-for-21 shooting during the fourth quarter.
Braydey Hodgins (13 points) and Jade Loville (10) rounded out the Bronco quintet scoring in double figures, while Ellie Woerner went 3-for-3 for eight points with five rebounds off the bench.
"We have a lot of different pieces and now we're able to put them together. Any given night can be different; A'Shanti can go off, Riley can go off, Braydey can go off. So, you never really know," Christopher said. Â
Hurst led New Mexico with 23 points on 7-for-17 shooting, while Hosey and Aisia Robertson each had 15. The Lobos opened the game 9-for-12 from the field before cooling off, as the Broncos were able to stay within range throughout the first half as New Mexico leveled out.
