BOISE, Idaho – Right-handed pitcher Matt Gabbert has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Boise State baseball program in the fall, head coach Gary Van Tol announced, Monday.
Gabbert is a two-sport athlete from Central Valley High School in Spokane, Wash. He was a quarterback for the Bears and was an infielder in addition to his pitching duties on the diamond.
"Another OKG wearing Blue and Orange, Matt's make-up, projection on the mound, football bloodlines and steady heartbeat make him a great fit for our program," Van Tol said. "His interest in becoming a Bronco was very clear from day one. We're fired up to have him and look forward to the opportunity to help him grow on and off the field. With four-year interest in Matt as a quarterback, he has tremendous upside. Bronco Nation will be excited to watch him develop as a full-time baseball player."
Gabbert was named All-Greater Spokane League honorable mention in baseball as a junior and helped Central Valley reach the state tournament. He threw for nearly 1,800 yards as a senior quarterback before his baseball season was canceled due to COVID-19.
