PHOENIX - Abu Kigab grabbed an offensive rebound and scored in the lane with 14.6 seconds left to lift Boise State to an 87-86 victory over San Jose State, Saturday. Derrick Alston, Jr. scored eight of his 20 points in the final four minutes, helping the Broncos extend their win streak to eight games.
The Spartans (1-6, 0-4 Mountain West) tied the game at 71 and again at 75. Both times the Broncos responded with a three-pointer - first from Max Rice, then from Alston. Eventually San Jose State did take the lead three different times in the final two minutes, but each time Boise State (8-1, 4-0 MW) had an answer.
Richard Washington twice put the Spartans on top with a contested three-pointer, connecting from the left wing with 1:45 left and then from the right corner with 37 seconds remaining for an 86-85 advantage.
On the ensuing possession, Boise State's first look went long, but Kigab ripped down his seventh rebound of the game and 21st of the series, dribbled into the paint and hit a leaning jumper to reclaim the lead.
After the heroics, Emmanuel Akot locked in on the defensive end and did not allow Washington to get a clean look in the final seconds. The final shot attempt grazed the rim as the buzzer sounded. Washington finished with 26 points and was 7-for-11 from three-point range.
Alston hit the 20-point plateau for the fifth straight game and added 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Mladen Armus also registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Six Broncos scored in double figures for the second straight game.
The eight-game win streak for Boise State is its longest since the 2015-16 team tied the school record with a 10-game streak. The Broncos are 4-0 in conference play for the third time since joining the Mountain West and the sixth time in program history.
Boise State returns home for its next Mountain West series, taking on Air Force Jan. 6 and 8. Tipoff for the series opener is set for 9 p.m. MT, on FS1.
