GAME ONE RECAP: Boise State saw its school-record win streak stop at 13 games after falling to Colorado State 78-56 Wednesday, at Moby Arena. It was the Broncos' first setback in Mountain West play. The Rams led by 15 at the half before Derrick Alston, Jr. spearheaded a surge for the Broncos. Alston scored 14 points in the first 8:24 of the second half, drawing the Broncos within five at 50-45 on a baseline dunk with 11:36 to play. A pair of three-pointers helped Colorado State stop the run and its defense sealed the victory. Boise State made one field goal in the final 8:43 as the Rams extended their advantage the rest of the way.
UNCHARACTERISTIC: Boise State was held to season lows for points (56), field goal percentage (.382) and rebounds (24) in the series-opening loss Wednesday, while committing a season-high 15 turnovers. The 21.7 percent three-point shooting performance was the team's lowest since its season-opening loss at Houston. The Broncos have only been outrebounded twice this season, dropping both games.
ANALYZE AND RESPOND: Boise State has not lost consecutive games for more than a year. The last time the Broncos dropped back-to-back contests was January 2020, at San Diego State and at Air Force.
ERVING AWARD: Boise State redshirt senior Derrick Alston, Jr. was named one of 10 finalists for the 2021 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday. Named after Class of 1993 Hall of Famer and 16-year professional basketball player Julius Erving, the annual honor in its seventh year recognizes the top small forwards in Division I men's college basketball. Alston made the top 10 for the Erving Award last season and was named to the preseason watchlist after announcing he would return for his senior season. He and Gonzaga's Corey Kispert are the only players to make the list as finalists each of the last two seasons.
