Ohlinger, O’Harra and Bartsch all reached double-digit kills but it was not enough against the Bulldogs.
FRESNO, Calif. - Boise State volleyball came up short on the road at Fresno State as the Broncos fell 3-1 in a Mountain West Conference match Thursday night. Lauren Ohlinger, Alli O'Harra and Paige Bartsch combined for 32 kills but it was not enough as the Bulldogs claimed their first victory over the Broncos since 2013.Â
The 25-22, 20-25, 25-13, 25-17 loss drops the Broncos to 15-7 overall and 4-6 in conference play, while Fresno State moved to 9-8 and 5-4. Next up, Boise State will play a nonconference match Saturday afternoon at Sacramento State.Â
The first two sets were battles to the end with the teams trading eight lead changes and 16 ties. In set one, Boise State rallied from two down to take a four-point 18-14 advantage. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs rallied late, outscoring the Broncos 11-4 to close the period with a 25-22 victory.Â
Set two saw the Broncos take the lead for good at 10-9. They held Fresno State's rally attempts off while stretching their lead to as many as five, including the final Boise State victory margin to even the match up at 1-1.
The final two sets saw the Broncos stay close early, then fade down the stretch as the Blue and Orange struggled to hit the ball.Â
In the end, Fresno State out hit Boise State .368 percent to .223 percent. The Broncos finished with 47 kills on 44 assists with eight service aces, 33 digs and three blocks. Surprisingly, the blocking game was a big advantage for the Bulldogs who out performed the Broncos — ranked second nationally for total blocks — by a 13 to three difference.
O'Harra finished the night with a team-high 13.5 points on 10 kills, three service aces and one block assist, she also hit a team and season-best .615 percent.Â
Ohlinger followed with 13 points on 12 kills and two block assists. Bartsch was next hitting .400 percent for 10 kills — her second career match in double-digit kills — with one block assist to end the contest with 10.5 points.Â
Kayly Pau added seven kills, while Danielle Boss finished with a team-high 42 assists and Jolei Akima tallied the high in digs with 11. Â Â
