Broncos rally from two sets down to beat UNLV

Freshmen Jordan Miller and Paige Bartsch played a big role in victory, combing for 23 kills and four blocks.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (10/28/2021) - Boise State volleyball rallied from two sets down Thursday night to defeat the UNLV Rebels in five 19-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-19, 15-7 in a Mountain West Conference match at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas. Lauren Ohlinger, Jordan Miller and Paige Bartsch all reached double-digit kills in the win to lead a balanced Boise State attack. 

"Good win for our team," said head coach Shawn Garus. "Nice to see some different players step up. A good start to the road trip and looking forward to a tough match against San Diego State."

Freshman Jordan Miller had a solid night in Las Vegas hitting .371 for a team-high 13 kills to go with a block solo and two block assists for 15.0 points. Alyssa Wissinger matched Miller for team honors in points with 15 on nine kills, three block solos and six block assists; in addition, she hit a team-best .533 percent. 

Ohlinger recorded a double-double on 11 kills and 10 digs to go with one block assist to finish with 11.5 points. Bartsch was the third Bronco to reach double-figure kills finishing with 10 while hitting .280 percent. 

Danielle Boss also tallied a double-double on 42 assists and 10 digs to go with six kills, one service ace and five block assists. 

Defensively, Chey Jones led the team in digs with 15, followed by Allison Casillas with 13. 

The Broncos started the match slow, then heated up as the match wore on while the Rebels cooled off down the stretch. Boise State finished the match hitting .285 as a team after hitting .042 and .235 percent in the first two sets, respectively, while UNLV hit .344 percent in the first, .316 percent in the second and finished the match at .205 percent. 

Boise State outscored the Rebels 65-38 in the final three sets as the Broncos rallied for the win. In the contest overall, the Blue and Orange edged UNLV 58-57 in team kills, five to two in service aces and 13 to nine in blocks. The Rebels also recorded 13 service errors to help in the Broncos' cause.

The match saw 26 ties and nine lead changes. Boise State held a lead through the midway point in the first set and was up 16-13 when the Rebels rallied. UNLV outscored the Broncos 12-4 in the final stages of the period to claim a six-point victory.

Set two was back and forth with five lead changes and 13 ties. It was pretty much a one or two point set until the midway point when the Rebels slowly pulled away for the three point win. 

Boise State began its rally with a quick start to open the third period and was up 10-2 before the Rebels knew what hit them. The Broncos never trailed in the set and finished hitting .333 percent as a team. Ohlinger led the Broncos with five kills and a block assist. 

Set four was close throughout with nine ties and three lead changes. Trailing 13-12, Boise State surged into the lead for the final time on a 6-1 run behind Miller and O'Harra who had two kills each in the run. The Broncos then put it in cruise control maintaining a three to four point lead most of the way before taking the set by six points.

Boise State used its momentum from winning sets three and four to its advantage heading into the decisive fifth set, racing out to a 7-0 lead to open the period. The Broncos completely dominated the Rebels in the fifth taking an 11-1 lead before UNLV managed to score again. In the end, the Blue and Orange won it by eight points hitting .438 percent.

In the final three sets the Boise State defense held UNLV to .057, .175 and .062 percent hitting, respectively.

Next up for the Broncos is a trip to San Diego State for a 7 p.m. (Mountain) Saturday evening encounter with the Aztecs.

  • Boise State swept the season series over UNLV winning both encounters in five sets. 
  • The rally from two sets down marks the second time this season that the Broncos have accomplished such a rally, the first came against Long Beach State on Aug. 27 in Boise. 
  • Boise State is now 3-2 in five set matches. 
  • Lauren Ohlinger recorded her eighth double-double of the season and 20th of her career.
