Boise State comes up short at New Mexico

Ohlinger recorded a season-high 22 kills to lead the Broncos against the Lobos.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Lauren Ohlinger recorded a season-high 22 kills on Saturday to lead Boise State at New Mexico, but it was not enough as the Lobos handed the Broncos a 3-1 setback in Mountain West Conference volleyball action. After winning the opening set, Boise State fell victim to late UNM runs in both the third and fourth sets as the Lobos rallied for the victory.Â
It was the first loss of the season for the Broncos after winning the opening set. The Broncos are now 14-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while New Mexico improved to 14-3 and 5-1 in league play, tied for first place. Â
The match was a battle throughout with a combined 41 ties and 24 lead changes through four sets. After splitting the first two periods, the contest came down to who could hold on in the final two.Â
The third set saw nine lead changes and 14 ties before it was all done. The set was tied at 21 all when the Lobos strung a 4-0 run together to take it from the Broncos who had led 19-18 at one point.Â
In the decisive fourth set, Boise State trailed 2-1 early before rallying to take a 3-2 advantage, then held the lead until late in the period. The Broncos led by as much as three points at 15-12 when New Mexico started to rally. With the score tied at 19, the Lobos closed it out with a 6-1 run to claim the match 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-20.Â
Ohlinger had a solid outing for the Blue and Orange recording a team-high 22 kills on 59 attacks. She added nine digs and a season-high five block assists to finish with a team and personal-season-best 24.5 points.Â
Jessica Donahue followed Ohlinger, hitting .500 percent and tallying nine kills with one service ace, a season-high seven blocks — one solo — to finish with 14 points. Meanwhile, Alyssa Wissinger hit .643 percent for nine kills.
Danielle Boss distributed 45 assists from the setter position and added two kills, eight digs and one block assist.Â
Defensively, Allison Casillas tallied a team-high 14 digs as the libero, while Jolei Akima added 11.Â
Boise State will be back in action next week when San Diego State and UNLV come to Boise. Â
