Monster Second Half Clinches Sweep

2/20/2021 1:21:00 AM | Men's Basketball

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State scored 51 second-half points on 73.9 percent shooting to rally past Utah State Friday, 81-77, earning a massive series sweep. Abu Kigab poured in 16 points after halftime, including four free throws in the final 90 seconds to keep the Broncos on top.

Boise State (18-4, 14-3 MW) sits alone in first place in the Mountain West, with three more league wins than anybody else. The 14 conference victories are tied for the most in program history.

The Broncos trailed by seven at halftime and the Aggies (14-7, 11-4 MW) extended the lead to nine early in the second half. A Derrick Alston, Jr. three-pointer kick started a 14-0 Boise State run over less than four minutes, to take a five-point lead.

Utah State responded immediately with eight straight points. After the teams traded baskets, Alston again ignited a rally. Utah State led by four as the clock neared six minutes, when the Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year took over. He scored all nine of Boise State's points during a 9-2 run that put the Broncos up 71-68 with 4:08 to go, punctuated with a two-handed slam off a backdoor pass from Mladen Armus.

Armus carried the torch on both ends of the floor in closing minutes. He scored back-to-back contested, driving layups, the latter putting Boise State on top 75-72 with 1:47 left.

Boise State pushed the advantage to six before the Aggies cut the margin to three on two different occasions in the final minute. Kigab and RayJ Dennis sealed the win at the line.

Alston led the Broncos with 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting. He has scored at least 23 points in three consecutive games. The redshirt senior has scored at least 20 points in 12 games this season, including 10 of Boise State's 17 conference contests.

Armus ended up with 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. He is averaging 8.5 points and 7.9 rebounds in Mountain West play. Kigab finished with 19 points, while Dennis joined them in double figures with 10, his first double-digit scoring output since Jan. 13.

Utah State was hot out of the gate, scoring the first nine points and taking a 17-7 lead in less than four minutes. Boise State battled back to take a lead in the first half before going cold to end the period. The 10-point deficit is the largest the Broncos have overcome in a win this season.

The Broncos travel to No. 25 San Diego State for a two-game series, Feb. 25 and 27.
