ABOUT THE AZTECS: San Diego State is riding an eight-game winning streak, vaulting into the national polls and up to No. 23 in the NCAA NET Rankings. The Aztecs are led by the senior duo of Matt Mitchell and Jordan Schakel. Mitchell and Schakel, the only two Aztecs averaging in double figures, combine to score 29.7 points per game. Schakel ranks fifth nationally shooting at a 45.7 clip from three-point range. He and Terrell Gomez lead a lethal long-range shooting unit, as San Diego State connects from deep at 38.7 percent, 15th nationally.
SERIES HISTORY: San Diego State leads the all-time series 15-7. The Aztecs won all three meetings last season, including a semifinal matchup in the Mountain West Championship. Boise State is 2-6 all-time at Viejas Arena, with six of the eight meetings decided by single digits - four of them by three points or fewer.
CONSISTENT AND EFFICIENT: During Mountain West play, Derrick Alston, Jr. is averaging 18.4 points per game and shooting 49.3 percent from the field, 43.4 percent from three-point range and 84.2 percent from the free throw line. Alston is the only player in the Mountain West to rank in the top 10 in each category. His 10 league games with at least 20 points are the most in the conference.
CROWDED AT THE TOP: Boise State (14-3) enters the series alone atop the Mountain West standings, but tied in the loss column with San Diego State (11-3) and Colorado State (11-3). Utah State (11-4) is currently in fourth place. Each team still has a chance to claim the regular-season championship. Assuming all remaining games throughout the league are played as scheduled, Boise State and San Diego State each control their own path to an outright title.
NOT FINISHED YET: The Mountain West announced a slate of rescheduled games for next week, making up many of the games across the conference which were postponed due to various health and safety concerns throughout the regular season. Boise State had just one league game impacted, the series finale against Fresno State (Jan. 22), which will now be played March 2, in Boise, at 5 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
