FINAL RESULTS
BASKERSFIELD, Calif. – It had been 334 days since the Boise State women's golf team was able to compete, but the squad opened its 2021 season with a bang, finishing runner-up at the Valley Invitational, Tuesday. The Broncos boasted four individuals in the top 10, including a pair of freshmen making their collegiate debuts.
The second-place finish is the team's best effort since winning the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, Sept. 17-19, 2018.
"I'm really proud of this team starting off strong, especially after 334 days without competing," head coach Nicole Bird said. "Having freshmen lead us this week shows this team has a lot of talent, and we have big things to accomplish this season!"
The Broncos' top two finishers were each playing in their first collegiate events – freshman Emma Yang finished tied for third (78-74-74—226, +10), while fellow freshman Elli Gordon (81-71-76—228, +12) finished tied for eighth.
Â
Juniors Lexi Perry (78-77-75—230, +14) and Nicole Suppelsa (82-74-74—230, +14) each finished tied for 10th.
The Broncos' second-round 296 (+8) was the lowest team score of the tournament, and the 23-stroke improvement from Monday's opening round marked the largest round-to-round improvement over the two days. The team's final-round 299 (+11) was the lowest score of the day, and the Broncos' effort in rounds two and three moved the team from seventh to second.
Sophomore Elena Castanon (85-82-79—246, +30) rounded out the scoring for Boise State, while freshman Elena Pany (86-78-86—250, +34) competed as an individual.
Next up for Boise State is The Classic, hosted by Wyoming in Palm Desert, Calif., Feb. 15-16.
