Boise State Earns Sixth Sweep of Season at Nevada

3/12/2021 9:46:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

RENO, Nev.  - Jessica Donahue and Lauren Ohlinger combined for 27 of Boise State's 50 kills Friday night to lead the Broncos to their sixth sweep of the season 3-0 over Nevada. The win improved Boise State to 9-2 overall and keeps it in second place in the league standings.
"Our team played well right from the start. We came out strong and built some comfortable leads in the first couple of sets, which is something that we've been stressing in practice," said head coach Shawn Garus. "I like that we had to battle from behind in the third set when Nevada was playing well. It's good for our young kids to learn to overcome challenges like that when the other team has it going."

The Broncos dominated the first two sets pulling away early to win both by eight points at 25-17. The third set saw the Wolf Pack come out fired up and lead till midway through the period before the Broncos seized control. Boise State used a 5-0 run — powered by three Ohlinger points — that brought the Broncos from 15-12 down to 17-15 up. The Blue and Orange never trailed again and eventually won the set 25-22 to clinch the victory.

Donahue returned to action this week after missing last week's home matches versus New Mexico. The middle blocker led the Broncos with a team-high 14 kills while hitting a career-high 63.2 percent, she also had three block assists to finish with a team-best 15.5 team points.

Ohlinger was the only other Bronco in double-figure kills tallying 13 on the night to go with one service ace, six digs and 14 points.

Kayly Pau had eight kills, three digs and one block assist, meanwhile, Alyssa Wissinger added six kills while hitting 54.5 percent (6-0-11) to go with a team-high four blocks, one solo.

"I thought that our middles (middle blockers) were really effective tonight," said Garus. "Jessica (Donahue) and Alyssa (Wissinger) were both extremely effective for us, which means that Dani (Boss) did a nice job of finding them in transition and in places that they could score. I thought that was really big for us."

Danielle Boss was the floor leader once again from the setter position where she recorded her team-high seventh double-double of the year on 39 assists and 12 digs, along with five kills and two block assists.

Allison Casillas recorded a team-best 19 digs along the back line for Boise State.

The Broncos hit the ball well at .296 percent for 50 kills on 45 assists and had two service aces, 60 digs and seven blocks. For the third-consecutive match Boise State has held its opponent below seven percent hitting with the Wolf Pack hitting 6.7 percent tonight for 28 kills on 28 assists, with seven service aces, 42 digs and six blocks.

The Broncos and Wolf Pack will wrap up the two-match series Saturday at noon (MT) in Reno, Nev.
