Broncos Fall to Aztecs in Five

3/20/2021 8:00:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Boise State suffers first home loss of the season as it falls to 10-3 overall.

BOISE, Idaho - Kayly Pau hit 30.2 percent for 15 kills to lead Boise State, but it was not enough as the Broncos fell to the San Diego State Aztecs in five sets 3-2. The Broncos struggled offensively against the Aztecs on Saturday as they lost at home for the first time this season. Boise State moves to 10-3 overall with a pair of road matches on the schedule for next week at Colorado State and Air Force.

"It's a frustrating loss. I think that San Diego State came in and played with better energy than us right from the start," said head coach Shawn Garus. "It was disappointing because I think our players were just fighting themselves all day long. To get the fifth set to 13 all for the second time this year and lose, we've been at that spot before and haven't figured out a way to win. I just thought that San Diego was a more aggressive team today. I think they served tougher, their attackers went for it. I think we kind of played on our heels a little bit, maybe a little shocked that San Diego State was pushing us like that based on the records, but that's a mentality change that I definitely want to address with the team."

The Blue and Orange had trouble establishing any consistency against the Aztecs Saturday afternoon as the two teams traded sets. SDSU won the first, third and fifth sets, while the Broncos played from behind and rallied twice winning the second and fourth to force it into a decisive fifth set. They rallied from five down in the fifth set to tie it at 13-13 before falling 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 24-26 and 15-13.

Despite their struggles, the Broncos had their chances as all five sets were close. Boise State finished the match hitting a season-low 15.7 percent for 59 kills on 50 assists with nine service aces, 62 digs and seven blocks. It marked only the second time all season that the Broncos were out blocked as the Aztecs finished with 15. San Diego State hit 35.8 percent for 62 kills, 59 assists, eight service aces and 73 digs.

Lauren Ohlinger tallied a team-high 17 kills with one service ace, nine digs and two blocks. Pau hit a team-high 30.2 percent for her 15 kills and had three blocks. Jessica Donahue added 11 kills and three blocks.

Danielle Boss distributed 46 assists to go with 12 digs to record her team-best eighth double-double on the year. Meanwhile, Allison Casillas had a team-high 19 digs followed by Boss with 12 and Jolei Akima with 10. Casillas and Jordi Holdaway tied for a team-high three service aces each.
