Kayly Pau led Boise State with a team-high 10 kills while hitting 34.8 percent.
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State volleyball cruised past the New Mexico Lobos in a 3-0 sweep to open the two-match series in Boise on Friday. Freshman Kayly Pau led the Broncos hitting 34.8 percent for a team-high 10 kills. With the win Boise State gets back in the win column as it improved to 7-2 overall.
"I feel for New Mexico, they're really down right now and they've been on the road for five straight weeks," said head coach Shawn Garus. "I think today's result had a lot more to do with New Mexico being less than their best, because I don't think we played with great intensity from start to finish today."Â
"I thought one of the keys today was our serving," said Garus. "We were able to serve well and that put New Mexico into some difficult situations. They were out of system a lot and we picked up a lot of easy points there. I'm glad that some of our kids that have been working hard in practice were able to get on the court and play a little bit more than they have in the past. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's match up to see if our team can come out with a little bit more intensity right from the start and play a little cleaner on our side of the net."
The Broncos dominated all three sets over the short-handed Lobos. Boise State steamrolled through the first set winning by 16 points; then took control of the second set midway through the period to win by six points; followed by another dominating performance in the third to claim a 25-9, 25-19, 25-13 victory over UNM in Bronco Gym. Â
Pau was the only Bronco to reach double-figures in kills as she notched her fifth double-digit kill match of the season. She added two digs and three block assists to her totals versus the Lobos.Â
Lauren Ohlinger backed up Pau with a team-second-best seven kills to go with two assists, one service ace and two digs. Alyssa Wissinger had four kills and five block assists while Shae Duffy tallied five kills.
Danielle Boss played the first two sets at setter before true-freshman Ashley Hayden came in for the third. Boss had three kills, 17 assists, three service aces, six digs and team-high six block assists. Hayden finished with one kill, nine assists, one ace and one block.
Allison Casillas recorded a team-high 11 digs while anchoring the back line, followed by Jolei Akima with nine.
Boise State hit 32.5 percent — second-best percentage of the season —  for 37 kills on 35 assists with a season-high nine service aces, 41 digs and 11 blocks. New Mexico was held to 3.4 percent hitting — a season low for a Boise State opponent — with 23 kills, 22 assists, three service aces, 32 digs and two blocks.Â
The Broncos and Lobos will meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday in Bronco Gym.
