Broncos Dominate Day One of Corban April AVCA Pairs Tournament

Boise State goes 15-3 on the opening day of the second pairs tournament at Corban University in Salem, Ore.
SALEM, Ore. - Boise State's beach volleyball team picked up where it left off at the first Corban pairs tournament in March, dominating the field Friday at the Corban April AVCA Pairs Tournament going a combined 15-3. Three teams went 3-0, while the other three went 2-1 as the Broncos impressed everyone on the sand.
The competition featured six pools of four pairs divided up into two waves of competition with one playing in the morning and the second in the afternoon. There are four schools represented at this event including: Boise State, Corban, Oregon and Washington.
The morning wave included four pools A, B, E, and F. Boise State's Rorianna Chartier and Kaylee Mejia cruised through their three matches winning all of them. They opened with a three-set victory over Washington's Scarlett Dahl and Natalie Robinson 31-29, 13-21, 15-12. They then rolled to two straight-set victories over Oregon's Batia Rotshtein and Abby Plevin 21-13, 21-9 and a team from Corban.
In Pool B, Erin Martin and Evi Wilson also dominated their group claiming three straight set victories by defeating Oregon's Vivian Donovan and Anastasia Lima  21-7, 21-18, Washington's Kyra Peterson and Ashley Shook 21-9, 21-19 and Corban's Sam Fast and Michelle Rosas 21-12, 21-10.
Kylee Johnson and Ellie McDonald swept through Pool F as well, defeating Oregon's Mia Lopez and Savannah Siegrist 21-12, 21-15 and two pairs from Corban in two sets each.
Yasmin Tan and Maya Watkins went 2-1 in Pool E defeating two teams from Corban and falling in three sets to Washington's Callie Weber and Cassidy Schilling 21-19, 18-21, 15-13.
In the afternoon wave, both of Boise State's pairs went 2-1. Sierra Land and Katie Martin — competing in Pool D — claimed wins over Oregon's Ashley Haden and Bea Wetton 21-15, 21-18 and a pair from Corban 21-15, 21-15, then lost to Washington's Shayne McPherson and Chloe Loreen 21-12, 21-14.
The final Bronco tandem was Joey Benson and Sedona Hansen who beat Washington's Hannah Yerex and Avie Niece 21-15, 21-15 and a Corban duo 21-12, 21-13, but lost to Oregon's Carly Wallace and Madelyn LaFollette 21-15, 21-13.
The teams advance out of today's pool round into tomorrow's championship brackets based on today's results. All of the Broncos' pairs should see action in the top brackets Gold and Silver on Sunday.Â
