Broncos Finish Fifth at Mountain West Championship

TUCSON, Ariz. – Boise State played solid golf in the third and final round of the 2021 Mountain West Championship, Saturday, but fell victim to a record-setting performance.
 
The No. 46 Broncos entered the day atop the leaderboard at 6-under, one shot better than No. 26 San Diego State. Boise State posted a 7-under, 281 to finish 13-under, but slipped to fifth behind No. 28 New Mexico (-19), Nevada (-19), San Diego State (-14) and UNLV (-14).
 
New Mexico shot a Mountain West Championship record 19-under, 269 in the final round. Nevada carded a 17-under, 271, which tied the previous record. The Lobos defeated the Wolf Pack on the first playoff hole to capture the team championship.
 
A four-player playoff for the individual title followed between Boise State's Hugo Townsend (69-70-70-209), New Mexico's Sam Choi, San Diego State's Puwit Anupansuebsai and UNLV's Jack Trent after the quartet finished 7-under.
 
Townsend, ranked 18th nationally, Choi (No. 26) and Anupansuebsai (No. 66) each made par on the first playoff hole while Trent was eliminated with a bogey. Anupansuebsai won the individual medalist honor with a birdie on the second playoff hole.
 
For Townsend, his performance marked his fifth top-five finish this season and he placed in the top 25 in all-seven tournaments the Broncos have played.
 
Joe Neuheisel (69-70-73-212) earned his second-straight top 15 with a 4-under to tie for 11th. Skyler Eubank (72-72-69-213) was 3-under to tie for 14th. It was the fifth top-25 effort of the season for Eubank. Josh Gliege (70-75-76-221) tied for 32nd and Max Charles (79-76-72-227) tied for 44th.
 
The Broncos placed three in the top 15 at a conference championship for the first time since 2008 as a member of the Western Athletic Conference when Troy Merritt was the medalist and Matt Hastings and John Baranco each earned a top 10.
 
Boise State will wait until Wednesday, May 5 at noon MT to learn if it receives an NCAA regional bid.
