KUNA, Idaho – Josh Gliege fired a score of 15-under par to win the individual title while Alex Talbot and Skyler Eubank finished in a tie for second at the IGA Idaho State Amateur at Falcon Crest Golf Club July 8-10.
Gliege, who played for the Broncos last season, was consistency defined as he posted three rounds of 67 at the par-72 course to finish 15-under, 201 and take home the win. The Eagle, Idaho, native put in 18 birdies across the tournament and sent home an eagle on No. 12 in round three.
"It was really fun having Skyler, Alex and I come down to the stretch on the final day," said Gliege, who recently accepted an assistant coaching position at Wichita State. "To come out on top was maybe the happiest I've felt about winning an individual event in my life as I'm basically done playing competitive golf now and am moving on to coaching."
Talbot (69-69-66—204) sank eight birdies as he carded a 66 in his final round to tie Eubank (68-66-70—204) 12-under. Eubank eagled No. 11 twice in the tournament, once in round one and again in round three, and shot 6-under in round two to claim his share of second place and complete a Bronco-sweep of the top three.
"If I am being honest I didn't feel great about my game going into the event," said Eubank. "I struggled in a few areas I usually don't, but it was nice to put together a good showing. I'm hoping I can build off this tournament and finish off my summer well."
The dominant performance continued an impressive offseason for Bronco golfers. Earlier this summer Joe Neuheisel claimed a spot as an alternate for the U.S. Open, while Hugo Townsend was selected to play for the International Team in the 2021 Arnold Palmer Cup. Townsend shot an 8-under in singles play to tie Texas A&M's Sam Bennett who war ranked fifth in the NCAA this season.
Gliege's win at the Idaho State Amateur brings a full-circle ending to one of the best seasons of all time for Bronco men's golf. It began last summer with Townsend also winning the same tournament, shooting a 10-under 206 to come from behind to steal the victory.
Townsend then had one of the most successful individual seasons in program history, placing in the top-25 of all eight of his competitions that season and in the top-10 six times. The Swede captured an individual title at the Duck Invitational in March and finished the season ranked 17th in the nation, garnering Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Year and PING All-America Third Team honors along the way. The junior finished the season with a 69.92 strokes-per-round average, the first time a Bronco has averaged sub-70 strokes since Troy Merritt in 2007-08.
The Boise State team as a whole also put up great results as it finished in the top five of all but one of its regular season tournaments and won its first team title since 2018. Max Charles fired a 10-under par to claim the first victory of his career as Boise State took home the trophy at the UCSB Collegiate, shooting 11-under par with four players finishing inside the top-25.
"One of the things that has made the last year of golf so special is that many of our guys have had big moment," said head coach Dan Potter. "Hugo Townsend has obviously been incredible, but Skyler Eubank has also been playing at a consistently high level. Joe Neuheisel reached a new level in his game and is just scratching the surface of his potential. Max Charles won a tournament and looks to be somebody who can take it to another level if he wants to. It was a big weekend for Alex Talbot to post three great rounds in the 60s. We will miss having Josh Gliege and Brian Humphreys this fall for their leadership and their great play, but it's been a blast to watch everybody feed off each other and have their moments."
Potter was named Mountain West Men's Golf Coach of the Year after guiding the team to its highest-final ranking in program history (46th) and its first trip to the NCAA Regionals in over 25 years. This was the first time since 2017 that a Mountain West school had swept both the player of the year and coach of the year awards. Additionally, Eubank was named All-MW, which marks the first time since 2008 the Broncos have had two all-conference selections.
