BOISE, Idaho - Kristian Widen announced Wednesday afternoon the addition of Jan Lucca Marquardt who is transferring from the University of Texas at Tyler.  The native of Altdorf, Germany, just wrapped up a sophomore campaign where he finished the season nationally ranked in NCAA DII and earned All-Lone Star Conference honors in both singles and doubles.
"We are happy to welcome Jan Lucca to the Bronco family this fall," said Widen. "Jan Lucca will come in and make an immediate impact on our team, with his big game and positive attitude, towards the job that needs to get done on a daily basis. From his junior days in his home country of Germany, he has all the tools needed to be successful at the Division I level and in our conference. His 6-foot-5 frame and big serve, will come in handy at the higher elevations we compete in."
Marquardt completed the 2021 campaign going 8-8 in singles competition, splitting time between the top two spots on the roster for UT Tyler including going 6-1 at the second position to earn second-team All-Lone Star Conference recognition and finish ranked 48th in the nation.
He also went 7-7 at No. 1 doubles, closing out the year going 6-3 with Michael Apple as they ended the season ranked 14th nationally and earned first-team All-LSC honors.
As a freshman in 2020, Marquardt went 6-3 at No. 1 singles during the COVID-19 shortened campaign. He won four matches in straight-sets and finished the year ranked sixth in the ITA South Central Region — there were no final national rankings in 2020 because of the pandemic. He was also named the ITA's South Central Region Rookie of the Year.
He is also an academic standout having earned ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition both years while in Tyler, Texas.Â
