9/13/2021 9:54:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Ohlinger, Hansen and Wissinger combined for 40 kills to lead Boise State to a big win over ranked Utes.

BOISE, Idaho  - The Boise State front line of Lauren Ohlinger, Makayla Hansen and Alyssa Wissinger combined for 39 kills and 14 blocks to lead Boise State to its biggest upset in program history as the Broncos knocked of 10th-ranked Utah 3-1 Monday afternoon in Boise. Boise State started strong claiming the opening set by seven points, then followed with victories in the third and fourth to secure the win 25-18, 16-25, 25-20, 25-21.

"I'm really proud of our team and how they prepared for this match," said head coach Shawn Garus. "We didn't prepare like Utah was unbeatable, we prepared like we had a great team coming in and a great opportunity. You know, we've played ranked teams before, but I don't know if we have beaten anybody as high as 10. It's just confidence building for all the players and it validates all their hard work, and should motivate them to keep working for more."

The victory extended the Broncos' win streak to seven and improved their overall record to 9-1, tied for the best start all-time after 10 matches. In addition, it is Boise State's third win ever over a top-25 team, the previous two came in 2016 against No. 17 Santa Clara in Boise and No. 20 Western Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Boise State battled hard against a talented Utes squad that was coming off a road upset of No. 3 Nebraska on Saturday. The Broncos hit .250 percent for 56 kills versus Utah, which countered by hitting .186 percent with 52 kills.

The opening set saw the Broncos start to pull away midway through, slowly stretching a 9-8 lead out to nine points before taking it by seven in the end.

Utah came back to take the second set by nine points to even the match up. Boise State responded by taking the final two periods. The Broncos hit .571 percent in the third set as they rallied from an early deficit to beat the Utes by five down the stretch.

The fourth set was tight from the start as the teams traded points and small leads. With the Blue and Orange leading 18-17, Ohlinger and Hansen combined for three kills to go with a Utah error to take a five-point lead at 22-17. The Utes could not recover as the Broncos claimed the set win and the upset victory over the nationally-ranked Utes.

Ohlinger finished the match hitting .333 percent for a team-high 16 kills to go with two assists, one service ace, 13 digs, one block assist and 17.5 points. It was her fifth double-double of teh year on kills and digs.

Hansen hit .258 for 14 kills to go with her 11 digs -- her second double-double of the season -- and team-high six block assists, finishing with 17.0 points.

"We were high energy today, we played with great passion," said Hansen. "Our entire team played well, we passed well and we were focused. I thought Dani (Boss) did an amazing job distributing the ball which allowed us to play great."

Wissinger hit .312 percent for nine kills and added seven blocks, one solo, for 13.0 points.

Jessica Donahue and Alli O'Harra each added three block assists, while O'Harra tallied a team-high three service aces.

Danielle Boss distributed 42 assists and had a team-high 15 digs to record her fifth double-double of the season, while Jolei Akima recorded 13 digs.

Boise State will be back in action this Thursday night when they open the Boise State Classic with the Santa Clara Broncos at 7 p.m. (MT).
