Kayly Pau

Broncos sweep Santa Clara to run win streak to eight

9/16/2021 9:51:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Pau led Boise State past Santa Clara with team-high 10 kills in the battle of the Broncos.

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State's Kayly Pau and Makayla Hansen tallied 10 kills apiece to lead the Broncos in a 3-0 sweep over the Santa Clara Broncos Thursday night in the opening match of the Boise State Classic. All three sets were close throughout with the Blue and Orange pulling away down the stretch in each.

"Honestly, it was just a whole team effort tonight," said Pau. "We came in knowing that we can beat teams that are tough, we can beat teams that are ranked. We just came out with the mindset that what we've done leading up to tonight's match is in the past and that this is the match that matters right now. I think we all worked together, played our position and supported each other."

The victory stretched Boise State's win streak to eight and improved its overall record to a school-record-tying 10-1 mark after 11 contests. The Blue and Orange will take Friday off while Santa Clara and Oregon State face off at noon. That will be followed by Boise State and Oregon State in the Classic's finale at 12 p.m. Saturday afternoon in Bronco Gym.

"I'm thrilled with the 3-0 victory," said head coach Shawn Garus. "I thought it was a bit of a grind. Santa Clara came out and did some things that stressed us a little bit early, some of our key players didn't get off to good starts offensively. So it's great to see people like Kayly Pau step up and fill the void for some of the others when we needed her too."

"I thought our blocking was a little sloppy today," said Garus. "I'm not gonna get all over the team about it, but it's something that we will definitely watch on film with them tomorrow to make sure that we're lined up and ready to go for a really physical Oregon State team."

Boise State out hit Santa Clara .271 percent to .205 percent, but SCU had more kills 42 to 39. The difference makers were the Broncos' blue wall which recorded eight blocks compared to the visitor's three, as well as Boise State's serving tallying 11 service aces to Santa Clara's three.

Pau hit .333 for 10 kills to go with two block assists and 11.0 points on the night. Hansen added her third double-double of the season on 10 kills and 10 digs, she also had one service ace, two block assists and 12.0 points.

Lauren Ohlinger followed with eight kills, three service aces and three block assists to finish with a team-high 12.5 points.

Alyssa Wissinger added six kills while hitting a team-best .556 percent with five blocks — one was a solo.

Danielle Boss distributed a team-high 32 assists, while Jolei Akima had a team-best 12 digs.
