Ohlinger, Pau and Hansen combined for 27 kills to lead Boise State to a sweep over the Pac-12 Beavers.
BOISE, Idaho - Lauren Ohlinger, Kayly Pau and Makayla Hansen combined for 27 kills as the Broncos swept the Pacific-12 Conference Oregon State Beavers 3-0. Boise State never trailed in the contest and was on fire from the start hitting at or above .345 percent in all three sets before finishing the match at .474 percent — the fourth-highest hitting percentage in program history — while holding the Beavers to .147.Â
Senior setter Danielle Boss was named the Boise State Classic MVP, while Pau, Hansen and Alyssa Wissinger were all named to the all-tournament team. Â
Head coach Shawn Garus is excited about how the team has started the season, "I think it's been fantastic. I'm so proud of our entire roster. Everybody contributed, because of how competitive practice is. That's the type of thing that winning teams do, they get after it with each other in the gym and they hold each other accountable. We didn't win this with just the people on the court getting kills, we won it with the whole team in our preparation everyday."
Ohlinger is excited about the team's start and heading into league play, "I think our start has been amazing. I didn't really know about it (win-loss record) tying for the school record before now. But, I think we've been working really hard all year and it's all starting to show. I'm excited to start conference play, but I think it's going to take us continuing to stay at this level and not getting overconfident. We need to keep working on our passing and hitting, just going out and training hard everyday."
The 25-12, 25-17, 25-15 victory gave the Broncos their fourth-straight tournament title to open the season as they head into Mountain West Conference play next week at Colorado State and Wyoming.Â
Garus on keeping the momentum going, "I think it's gonna be a challenge, everybody starts fresh at 0-0. We don't get to carry over any of these wins into conference. I think that our team has learned what it takes to prepare and I think that'll help us as we get ready for good Mountain West teams. We start with a really tough road trip on the road at Colorado State and Wyoming, so we can't afford to take anybody for granted."
The victory was also the first win ever versus the Beavers and the second of the week for Boise State over the Pac-12 following Monday's upset of No. 10 Utah. The Broncos' win streak grew to nine as they improved to 11-1 overall with the win, tying for the best start in program history after 12 contests. Â
Danielle Boss directed the Bronco offense from the setter position where she distributed 31 assists and tallied three kills, one service ace, team-high nine digs and three block assists.
Garus was excited about the play of the entire team, but credited Boss for her play and leadership, "You know when your team hits for that high of a percentage (.474) where everybody is scoring at a high level, you've got to give credit to Dani Boss the setter. She's the one that's distributing the ball and creating one-on-one opportunities for her teammates."
Ohlinger led the offensive charge for the Broncos as she hit a career-second-best and season-high .588 percent for a team-high 10 kills to go with one service ace, three digs and 11.0 points.Â
Hansen followed Ohlinger by hitting .412 percent for eight kills while adding a team-best (tied) two service aces, two block assists to tie Ohlinger for the team-high in points with 11.0.Â
Pau hit .421 percent for nine kills and had two block assists to finish with 10.0 points.
Alyssa Wissinger ended the match hitting a career-second-best .625 percent with nine kills and three block assists.Â
