Broncos rally for victory over Southern Utah

Hansen, Ohlinger, Pau and Wissinger all reached double-digit kills combining for 50 kills to lead Boise State past SUU.
IRVINE, Calif. - It was a team effort that led Boise State volleyball from one set down to victory over Southern Utah in the opening match of the UCI/Adidas Invitational Friday afternoon. Makayla Hansen led a quartet of Broncos in double-digit kills with a career-high 17 followed by Lauren Ohlinger, Kayly Pau and Alyssa Wissinger who all finished with 11 each.
The Broncos overcame a slow start that saw them drop the opening set by four points before rallying to claim the final three to win the match 21-25, 25-9, 25-23, 25-11. The win improved the Blue and Orange to 3-1 overall with a second contest slated for later Friday night at 8 p.m. in the Bren Events Center versus the tournament host UC Irvine.
After taking a 3-2 lead early, Boise State trailed the rest of the way in the opening frame before falling 25-21.
The Broncos regrouped and came out on a mission in the second set wasting little time taking control with a 10-2 early advantage. Hansen recorded six of her kills during the period and the Broncos combined for nine team blocks in the frame to win it by 16 points.
After a tight third set saw Boise State rally from four points down to win it by two in the third frame to take the match lead. The Blue and Orange put the contest away with another dominating performance in the fourth period as Boise State claimed a 14-point victory over the Thunderbirds to clinch the match.
Hansen led Boise State hitting .282 percent for the team-high 17 kills to go with seven digs and three block assists to finish with a team-best 18.5 points.
Wissinger hit a team-high .688 percent collecting 11 kills with no errors on 16 attack attempts. She added two block assists to end the contest with 12.0 points.
Matching Wissinger's kill total were Ohlinger and Pau. Ohlinger finished with her third double-double of the season on the 11 kills and team-second-best 19 digs to go with a team-best four service aces and two block assists for 16.0 points. The service aces and digs tied her career high in both categories. She has now had back-to-back contests with four aces.
Pau added four digs and four block assists to her 11 kills as she ended up with 13.0 points.
Alli O'Hara also had an outstanding outing hitting .533 for nine kills while tallying a team-best nine blocks — one solo — to finish with 15.0 points.
Danielle Boss saw her season debut go well leading the Broncos to a season-high hitting percentage of .287 by distributing 49 assists. In her first match of the season, Boss added her first double-double tallying 17 digs to go with her assists.
Leading the back line defense was Jolei Akima at libero who led the team with a high of 22 digs, surpassing her previous career high of 15.
