Legacy Project: Connecting Our Past to Our Future

BOISE, Idaho – In celebration of the storied successes accumulated over several decades by Black student-athletes at Boise State, Bronco Athletics is seeking to grow its membership in the Legacy Project during Black History Month, director of athletics Jeramiah Dickey announced Tuesday.
In February 2021, Boise State Athletics, in conjunction with a group of alumni, created the Legacy Project, a space to celebrate the first Black student-athletes at Boise State University. The alumni brought forth an inspiring plan – to highlight and bring to our community's attention the history of Boise State's Black student-athletes.
"What Mike Campbell, Trent Johnson, Carl Powell and Booker Brown created in 2021 is nothing short of phenomenal," Dickey said. "Their concept, the effort they put into the Legacy Project and their execution of it will be forever commended. They have provided us a roadmap to honor a significant part of our department's – and our institution's – history, and we would like to continue to do so long into the future."
The initial group of Legacy Project honorees is a proud fraternity of Black Boise State student-athletes who competed between 1968-80, and helped lay the foundation for diversity and inclusion in Bronco Athletics before going on to successful careers in sport and beyond. This group attended school during the early years of Boise Junior College, Boise State College and later Boise State University, laying a significant part of the foundation for the University we know and love today.
In a letter from the founding members of the Legacy Project Team, they stated that, "Acknowledging this group of past Bronco student-athletes codifies a long and storied history of acceptance and outreach from the University; giving credence, through a historical perspective, to the University's decades of commitment in recruiting all athletes, regardless of race."
This year, Boise State Athletics will endeavor during the month of February to grow the membership of the Legacy Project, expanding beyond the original 30-member class. Bronco Athletics will utilize its social media channels across all programs throughout the month, attempting to reach as many alumni as possible in order to provide additional alumni an opportunity to join and have their stories told in the future.
