Broncos Hold Off Rebels

2/12/2022 12:55:00 AM | Men's Basketball

BOISE, Idaho - Abu Kigab and Tyson Degenhart each scored in double digits in the second half as the Boise State men's basketball team overcame its largest halftime deficit of the season to beat UNLV 69-63 Friday night at ExtraMile Arena.

A two-point jumper from the Rebels' Bryce Hamilton brought UNLV (14-11, 6-6 MW) within one of Boise State (19-5, 10-1 MW), 62-61, with a minute and a half remaining. On the other end, the Broncos were able to find Kigab in the corner for a clutch 3-pointer that put Boise State up four. UNLV would find a bucket on the other end, but the Broncos made their free throws to ice the game and walk away with their 16th win in the last 17 games.

Kigab finished the game with a team-high 18 points to go along with five rebounds. It was the fifth-straight game scoring double digits for Kigab, his longest streak of the season. Hamilton, the leading scorer in the Mountain West, poured in a game-high 32 points.

After falling down 13-4 early in the first half Boise State responded with a 6-0 run, during which they forced UNLV to go 0-of-6 from the floor. With just under six minutes remaining in the period, Kigab spotted up in the corner and drilled the Broncos' first 3-pointer of the game, which gave Boise State its first lead, 23-22.

UNLV closed the first half by outscoring the Broncos 14-5 in the final five minutes and held a 36-29 advantage heading into the break. The seven-point halftime deficit was the largest for Boise State this season. The Broncos overcame their largest previous halftime deficit - six points - on both occasions, against Ole Miss (Nov. 21) and at Utah State (Jan. 20).

Degenhart and Marcus Shaver, Jr. combined to score nine points on a 13-2 Boise State run to open the second half that gave the Broncos a 42-38 lead. Degenhart finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Shaver chipped in 13 points, three assists and three rebounds. Mladen Armus was the fourth Bronco in double figures, scoring 12 points to go along with seven boards.

This was the 10th conference win for Boise State and the ninth-straight win at ExtraMile Arena. The Broncos went 23-of-29 from the free throw line (.793) against the Runnin' Rebels, and are now 80-of-102 (.784) at the free throw line the last six games. Boise State was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final two minutes of tonight's game.

A quick turnaround is in store for Boise State as it plays host to preseason Mountain West favorites Colorado State, Sunday. The game is set to tip at 2 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on FS1.
