BOISE, Idaho – Jordyn Hutchins delivered a pinch hit, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to give Boise State a 4-3 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader against Fresno State, Friday.
The Broncos (22-5, 2-0 Mountain West) belted five home runs game one to post a 13-5 mercy-rule victory over the Bulldogs (5-20, 0-2).
"I thought we played on our heels a little bit and didn't play Bronco softball," Boise State Head Coach Justin Shults said. "The nicest thing about this team, and we have talked about it all year, is our depth. Mykenzie Hanna came off the bench in game one and two really good at bats and then Jordyn (Hutchins) came up clutch in the second game."
The Broncos trailed 3-0 until the sixth inning when Kelsey Lalor homered with two outs. In the seventh, Eliyah Flores opened with a single and moved to third on a base hit by Abby Bumcrot. Hutchins then came off the bench to provide the heroics on a 2-2 pitch from Casey Dixon (2-4).
Hannah Bailey (9-1) blanked Fresno State over 3 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win.
In the opener, Alison Seng homered twice and Lalor, Kelsey Hall and Bella Rocco each contributed a long ball. Rocco's blast followed a two-run double by Hanna in the sixth inning and closed out the mercy-rule victory.
Sara Johnson (6-1) recorded the final eight outs to pick up a victory.
The Broncos and Bulldogs are slated to meet at 1 p.m., Saturday in the final game of the series.
