Broncos Take Series Opener in Logan 8-4 Over the Aggies

Abby Bumcrot and Kelsey Lalor hit homers to lead Boise State past Utah State.
The victory improved the Blue and Orange to 32-10 overall and 11-5 in conference play, while the Aggies dropped to 25-22 and 10-6. Boise State and Utah State entered the series in a three-way tie with UNLV for second place in the league standings.
Hannah Bailey pitched her 10th complete game in collecting her 14th win of the season. The senior faced 28 batters giving up four runs on eight hits, including one home run, with three strikeouts and no walks.
Six Broncos recorded hits against the Utah State pitchers as they combined for 11 hits; six were extra-base hits with two homers. Kelsey Hall led the team with three hits on three at-bats, followed by Bumcrot, Lalor and Eliyah Flores with two each. Boise State, ranked 10th nationally for doubles per game, hit four more on Friday.
Bumcrot opened the game with a lead-off homer over the right field fence; it was her first home run of the season.
Utah State struck back with three runs in the bottom of the first to take the early lead.
After two scoreless innings, Boise State rallied in the fourth. Lalor started the inning off with a lead-off homer to center, her 12th home run of the season, and ninth in conference play; both are team highs.
Later in the fourth, Hall reached on a single, then came home from second when Serena Huchingson singled to the right.
With the game tied at 3-3 heading into the fifth, the Broncos scored two more to regain the lead. Bumcrot started things rolling when she sent a one-out double to left center. She crossed the plate when Eliyah Flores hit a double to the left, giving the Blue and Orange a 4-3 advantage. The final score of the inning followed a Lalor single down the left line that scored Flores from second to make it 5-3, Broncos.
Boise State scored six straight runs with two more in the sixth. The Broncos had two out and Huchingson on first base when Alycia Flores sent a pinch-hit double to right field that brought Huchingson home. Flores' hit increased the Broncos' pinch-hitting success to 23 hits on 72 at-bats.
Flores would come home on a fielding error when the left fielder dropped a fly ball hit by Jalen Ervin as the visitors took a 7-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Utah State cut the Broncos' lead to three with a run in the bottom of the sixth when Lexi Orozco scored from third on a single by Taryn Edds.
Eliyah Flores opened the seventh with a double to right center. Boise State scored the contest's final run when Flores came home from third on a Hall single to the right side to make it 8-4 Broncos.
The three-game series continues Saturday with a noon (Mountain) start in Logan. Because of a poor weather forecast for Sunday, Saturday may become a doubleheader with game three of the series moving up a day.
