Boise State Splits on Saturday in Sacramento

The Broncos opened the day defeating Sacramento State 4-1 before getting edged by San Jose State 3-2.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Danielle Boss and Madison Nichols, and Rorianna Chartier and Sierra Land went undefeated on Saturday to lead Boise State to a road split as the Broncos defeated Sacramento State 4-1 before getting edged out 3-2 by San Jose State. The split snapped a school-record eight-match wins streak while the record for wins in a season grew to 18.

Boss and Nichols won their two contests on Saturday to extend their wins streak to nine straight as they improved to 18-9, setting a new record for wins by a pair in a season. Chartier and Land have won six-consecutive matches as they also claimed a pair of victories on the day to improve to 16-11 overall.

In the morning match versus Sacramento State, the Broncos once again started with a 1-0 lead — as they did on Friday — as the Hornets forfeited the No. 5 pair for the second day.

Kaylee Mejia and Sharli O'Neil pushed the Broncos' advantage to 2-0 with a straight-set victory at No. 4 pair, 21-12, 21-18, recording their 12th win of the season.

After Sacramento State came back with a three-set win at court three to close within 2-1, Boss and Nichols put away the Hornets' No. 2 pair of Macey Hayden and Kalani Hayes 21-14, 21-14 to clinch the victory with Boise State up 3-1. Chartier and Land closed the match out with a two-set 21-16, 21-19 win on court one.

In the second contest of the day, Boise State saw a 2-0 lead slowly disappear as the Spartans rallied to edge the Broncos 3-2. Chartier and Land put the Broncos on the scoreboard at 1-0 with a two-set win at No. 2 pair, 21-19, 21-12. Boss and Nichols followed them on court three, where they beat their opponents 21-15, 21-13 to spot the Blue and Orange the 2-0 lead.

Unfortunately, the final three contests went to San Jose State, two in three sets. No. 1 pair saw Erin Martin and Yasmin Tan win the first set only to have SJSU's Jaida Ward and Haylee Nelson force the match to a third set where the Bronco tandem came up just short 13-21, 21-18, 15-12. Joey Benson and Emilia Guerra-Acuna also came up short in three sets after winning the first.

Boise State improved to 18-9 overall with the split. The Broncos will take this coming week off before closing the regular season at the Utah Beach Classic in Salt Lake City on April 22-23.
