BOISE, Idaho – Boise State Volleyball Head Coach Shawn Garus has received a two-year contract extension, and Candy Murphy has been promoted to associate head coach, director of athletics Jeramiah Dickey announced Tuesday.
"Our volleyball program has positioned itself to compete for championships while developing student-athletes both on and off the court, and that is a direct result of the leadership of Shawn Garus and our staff," Dickey said. "I am thrilled to be able to invest in our coaches, program and student-athletes as we continue building on last season's successes."
For Garus, a two-time Mountain West Coach of the Year and the 2016 AVCA Region Coach of the Year who completed his 13th season with the Broncos this past fall, the extension runs his contract through Jan. 31, 2025. Garus has led the Broncos to their only two appearances in the NCAA Tournament in school history, in 2016 and 2021. Boise State advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2016.
Murphy spent the last 13 seasons as an assistant coach with the Broncos, assisting Garus in leading the program to an overall record of 230-159. With her new title, Murphy also received a two-year contract that runs through Feb. 29, 2024.
Under the duo's guidance, the volleyball program has posted a winning record in 10 of their 13 seasons – including each of the last seven – and won at least 20 matches four times (2010, 2015, 2016 and 2021).
The Broncos won the 2016 Mountain West regular-season championship – the first conference title since 1988. Boise State also won the initial MW Championship Tournament title this past fall, the first time the competition had been held since it was discontinued following the 2011 season.
In addition to the two NCAA Tournament appearances under their tutelage, Boise State also competed in the National Invitation Volleyball Championship in 2017 and 2019.
Other highlights from the last 13 years include one MW Player of the Year (the program's first such conference honor), four MW Freshmen of the Year, three MW Newcomers of the Year, 36 all-conference honors, six AVCA All-America honorable mention awards, six AVCA All-Pacific North Region and four honorable-mention honorees, seven CoSIDA Academic All-District Team award winners, 95 academic all-conference and 33 MW Scholar-Athlete honors, as well as four AVCA Team Academic honors.
