Broncos Take All- Three Championships At Barb Chandler Classic

BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State women's tennis team won all three flights on the final day of the fifth-annual Barb Chandler Classic, Sunday afternoon.
 
Joana Baptista and Nicole Discenza defeated Bronco teammates Pauline Ernstberger and Holly Stewart in the final of the Blue Flight. Baptista and Discenza won the doubles set 6-3, before splitting the singles match to claim a 2-1 aggregate win.
 
After losing the doubles set in the Orange Flight 7-6 (5), Ana Conde Vendrell defeated Lena Beckx (Idaho) 6-2, 6-0 in her singles match to even the score. Shauna Heffernan completed the comeback for the Blue and Orange, defeating Selin Sepken 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 in a match that lasted nearly three hours.
 
Bhakti Shah and Ryan Kershner cruised to victory in White Flight, beginning with a 6-0 doubles win. Shah went on to defeat Megan Lombardi (Weber State) 6-2, 6-1, while Kershner defeated Li Yang Ping An (6-4, 3-6, 6-4).

  • "Making sure we protected the home courts is an awesome feeling," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "Playing the way we did on the final day was incredible. It's one thing to get there and it's another to finish it. I was really proud of the resolve. We bounced back in some matches and responded to some situations. To come through all three flights was awesome."
  •  "It's really cool to see the results of the hard work we put in every day," said Joana Baptista. "But we don't stop here. This is a challenge that we overcame and we're going to keep going."
Top Broncos
  • Nicole Discenza posted a 3-0 record in singles on the weekend in the top flight.
  • Freshman Ryan Kershner was 2-0 in singles for the tournament. 
Notables
  • Boise State went 13-3 in singles and 6-2 in doubles on the weekend, not including matches against fellow Broncos.
  • The Broncos were 4-1 in singles matches that went to a third set. 
What's Next
Up next for the Broncos is the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C. Joana Baptista and Nicole Discenza will travel to play in the doubles bracket, while Pauline Ernstberger will join and compete in singles.
