Montgomery to continue guiding Jeanty, RB corps

BOISE, Idaho – After coaching Ashton Jeanty to one of the most successful years in program history and multiple All-American honors, running backs James Montgomery will be retained at Boise State. The announcement was made late Monday by newly minted head coach Spencer Danielson.

Montgomery initially joined the Boise State coaching staff on Jan. 31, 2023 as the running backs coach. He started off his tenure in the Blue and Orange by guiding the Broncos to the third-most rushing yards in the country during the 2023 season.

"James Montgomery has done a wonderful job guiding our incredible stable of running backs this past year and I know they will only get better as we head into 2024," Danielson said. "He is an energetic coach that always has our backs ready to perform and has shown he can develop backs to compete at the highest level. I'm excited he will be staying on staff here at Boise State."

In his first season in the Treasure Valley, Montgomery was responsible for coaching Jeanty to 1,916 yards from scrimmage, 1,243 of those came after contact. He forced 106 missed tackles while scoring 19 total touchdowns on the year. The Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year, Jeanty led the league in rushing by more than 200 yards and led the MW in all-purpose yardage by nearly 400 yards, all while playing in less than 12 full games. Meanwhile he helped George Holani wrap up his career by recording the fifth-most career rushing yards at Boise State as his 748 yards pushed his career tally to 3,596 total rushing yards.

Montgomery held the same position at Fresno State in 2022 as the Bulldogs won the Mountain West and the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl. Jordan Mims rushed for 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns to earn All-MW First-Team honors under Montgomery's tutelage.

A native of Sacramento, California, Montgomery played in the then Pac-10 (2006-10) at both California and Washington State. After coaching in the prep ranks for two seasons, he became the quality control coach at Weber State in 2013.

He spent the next six seasons at Sacramento State. After serving two years as an offensive assistant, Montgomery was promoted to running backs coach in 2016 and added recruiting coordinator duties in 2018. The Hornets were co-champions in the Big Sky in 2019, Montgomery's final season at Sacramento State, and added titles in 2021 and 2022 with several players he recruited.

Montgomery's final stop before Fresno State was a two-year stint at Cal Poly (2020-21) as the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator.
