James Montgomery
- Title:
- Running Backs
James Montgomery joined the Boise State coaching staff on Jan. 31, 2023 as the running backs coach.
Under Montgomery’s watch, running back Ashton Jeanty broke out as one of the best players in college football history. Jeanty became Boise State’s first unanimous All-American, Maxwell Award winner and Doak Walker Award recipient after he ran for 2,601 yards in 2024 – which was 27 yards shy of matching Barry Sanders’ all-time single-season rushing record. He was also named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award winner and Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row.
Led by Jeanty, the Boise State run game finished the 2024 campaign ranked eighth in the country by averaging 240.4 yards per game. This followed up the 2023 season - Montgomery’s first on staff - in which the Broncos were ranked sixth in the nation in rushing offense (214.9 yards/game).
Montgomery held the same position at Fresno State in 2022 as the Bulldogs won the Mountain West and the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl. Jordan Mims rushed for 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns to earn All-MW First-Team honors under Montgomery's tutelage.
A native of Sacramento, Calif., Montgomery played in the then Pac-10 (2006-10) at both California and Washington State. After coaching in the prep ranks for two seasons, he became the quality control coach at Weber State in 2013.
He spent the next six seasons at Sacramento State. After serving two years as an offensive assistant, Montgomery was promoted to running backs coach in 2016 and added recruiting coordinator duties in 2018. The Hornets were co-champions in the Big Sky in 2019, Montgomery's final season at Sacramento State, and added titles in 2021 and 2022 with several players he recruited.
Montgomery's final stop before Fresno State was a two-year stint at Cal Poly (2020-21) as the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator.
