Sophomore led nation in punting

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After leading the nation by averaging 49.6 yards per punt this season, Boise State sophomore James Ferguson-Reynolds was named Second Team All-America by Sports Illustrated on Wednesday.

Ferguson-Reynolds was a Second Team Freshman All-American last season after averaging 41.8 yards per punt, ranking 58th nationally. His improvement by nearly eight yards per punt led to national acclaim for the Australian punter, as well as a place on the Ray Guy Award Semifinalist list.

This season, he is one of only three punters in the country to register multiple punts of 70 yards or longer and his 25 punts that traveled 50-or-more yards ranks tied for 12th nationally. His punting caused eight touchbacks – ranking third in the country – while posting a net punting average of 43.1 yards, a number that placed him 10th in the FBS.

The honor for Ferguson-Reynolds is the fourth All-America honor to be bestowed upon a Bronco this season. Ashton Jeanty received first team honors from College Football News (CFN) and honorable mention accolades by CBS while Andrew Simpson garnered third team honors by CFN.

Ferguson-Reynolds was one of only six G5 student-athletes to receive All-America honors by Sports Illustrated. Of the G5 leagues, the Mountain West led with three selections. He will head to Los Angeles with the Broncos next week to face UCLA in the Starco Brands LA Bowl Hosted by Gronk on Dec. 16. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. MT/4:30 p.m. PT on ABC.
