Gymnastics Selected to 15th-Straight NCAA Regional

INDIANAPOLIS – The Boise State gymnastics team was selected to compete in the 2023 NCAA Regional Championships, the NCAA announced on its selection show, Monday morning. The Broncos will travel to the Los Angeles regional site, March 29-April 2.

Boise State has qualified for regionals in each of the last 15 seasons. The last time the Broncos missed out on the regional competition was in 2007. (The regional competition was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19).

Los Angeles is one of four host sites that each send two teams, an all-arounder and four event specialists to the national championships in Fort Worth, Texas, April 13-15. The Broncos will compete in the first round against conference-foe BYU.

Boise State finished the regular season with a National Qualifying Score (NQS) of 196.285, ranking 36th nationally. The Broncos rank 25th on beam owning an NQS of 49.200 and are tied for 28th on vault (49.150).

Individually, juniors Emily Lopez and Courtney Blackson concluded the regular season as the top bars specialists in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference. Lopez is tied for 14th nationally, posting an NQS of 9.935, while Blackson is tied for 29th with an NQS of 9.915.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT

The top 36 teams based on national qualifying score (NQS) are selected for regional competition. The NCAA selection committee will identify the top 16 teams and seed them in the bracket. Teams 17-36 will be placed geographically at one of the four regional sites. All host teams will remain home to compete, whether they are a top-16 seed or not. The top 12 all-around competitors and top 16 event specialists will be selected based on national qualifying scores and will be placed geographically, keeping individuals from the same team together.

Regional sites will host first round, second round and regional final competition over a three-day period. The first round will consist of two teams, second round will consist of eight teams and the regional final will consist of four teams. Regional competition will consist of nine teams, three all-around competitors and four individual specialists per event.

The National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championships will consist of eight teams, four all-around competitors and 16 event specialists. The top two teams and the top all-around competitor (who is not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships. In addition, the top event specialist in each event (not on an advancing team or an all-arounder) advances to the national championship (in that event only).

The team championship will be awarded to the team with the highest cumulative team score, with five scores counting per event. The all-around and individual event champions will be awarded to the individuals with the highest cumulative score during semifinal competition.
