Broncos Place Second at Husky Invitational

SEATTLE – Boise State finished in second place at the Husky Invitational on Sunday, defeating Oregon, 3-2, before falling to No. 13 Washington, 4-1, in the championship.

Joey Benson and Aris Vetter continued their hot streak from yesterday, winning on the No. 5 court in straight sets to give the Broncos (22-8) a 1-0 lead in their semifinal matchup against the Ducks. Oregon evened the score on the No. 2 court, but Emilia Guerra-Acuña and Lily Patock responded to retake the lead. After Oregon won on the top court, Kaylee Mejia and Elli Wolthuis clinched the dual at the No. 4 position, winning 21-18, 21-16.  

The Huskies landed the first blow in the championship, winning in straight sets on the No. 2 and No. 4 courts to take a 2-0 lead. Benson and Vetter capped an undefeated weekend, winning 21-8, 22-20 on the No. 5 court to cut into the Washington lead. The Huskies sealed the match by winning on the final two courts.

Notables

  • The Husky Invitational marks the last event of the regular season for the Broncos. The squad will compete in postseason play for the first time in program history April 21-23 at the Southland Conference Championship.
  • Joey Benson and Aris Vetter finished 5-0 as a pair on the weekend. The duo notched their 13th win as a pair at the No. 5 spot, breaking the program record for most wins by a No. 5 pair in a season.
  • Lily Patock picked up her 13th win this season at the No. 3 position, matching the program record.  
  • Kaylee Mejia and Elli Wolthuis tied the program record for career wins for a pair at the No. 4 spot with 12.
  • Boise State remains 13-0 all-time against Oregon.

What's Next

The Broncos will compete at the Southland Conference Championship April 21-23 in Corpus Christi, Texas. The three-day event will begin Friday, April 21, with No. 3 Boise State taking on No. 6 San Jose State. The winner will automatically qualify for the 2023 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship.
