BOISE, Idaho – Boise State volleyball battled hard against LMU Thursday night but came up on the short end of a 3-0 score (25-21, 25-21, 26-24) on the opening day of the Boise State Classic in Bronco Gym.

The first set saw both teams hit the ball well, LMU's .394 percent to Boise State's .333 percent. The Lions used a 5-0 run midway through the frame to turn a 14-14 tie into a 19-14 lead. The Broncos could get no closer than two down the stretch as LMU took the set 25-21.

The second set saw the same outcome with a 25-21 Lions victory, but it was a battle with seven lead changes and 17 ties. LMU won it late with a 5-1 run that snapped a 20-20 tie.

The third set saw the Broncos fall into a seven-point deficit before rallying to make it tight late. Trailing 24-21, Boise State fought off three set points to tie it at 24 on Paige Bartsch's fourth service ace. But LMU regrouped and scored the next two points to clinch the match.

Top Broncos

Bartsch recorded a team-high 14 kills and four services to finish with 18 points.
Anabel Kotzakov reached double-figure kills for the second time this season.
Noelani Helm earned her third double-double of the season on 31 assists and 10 digs.
Breanna Mitchell led the team defensively with a team-high 11 digs at the libero position.

"I thought we played really hard and had a good effort tonight," said head coach Shawn Garus. "The result of a three-set loss doesn't tell the whole story. I thought we had a lot of good contributions from many players. People showed today that they can play at this level. But we have got to keep working hard to sustain it."

Bartsch tallied her eighth straight match with double-digit kills and the 38th of her career.
