Junior wins floor with 9.950 as Broncos compete on national TV

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – The Boise State gymnastics team finished second among four teams at the nationally-televised Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad, on Friday, Jan. 12. The Broncos scored 196.250 to defeat No. 16 Nebraska (195.875) and No. 33 North Carolina (195.150), but were edged by Arizona (196.475).
 
Junior Emma Loyim won the floor with a score of 9.950, tying the program record and leading the Broncos to a meet-high rotation score of 49.425. All six floor competitors improved their scores from the Jan. 5 meet at Utah. 
 
The entire bars lineup also improved their scores from last Friday's meet, led by senior Emily Lopez, who tallied a 9.900 to place third. The Blue and Orange totaled 49.225 in the event, leading all teams.

On beam, fifth-year senior Adriana Popp earned a team-high 9.875, finishing second. Popp and Alyssa Vulaj tied for second overall with the Broncos' top score on vault, recording 9.850 The Broncos are now 2-2 this season.

Top Broncos Notables
  • Emma Loyim scored a career-best and tied the program record with a 9.950 on floor. This is the 25th time a Bronco has notched a 9.950 on floor.
  • Loyim won the event for the second time in her career. She has five career victories at Boise State.
  • All six Broncos that competed on floor improved their score from the Jan. 5 meet at Utah, as did all six of the bars competitors. The Broncos scored event-highs in both rotations, tallying 49.425 on floor and 49.225 on bars.
  • Alyssa Vulaj matched her career-high on floor with a 9.850. She also registered season-high scores on beam (9.825) and vault (9.850).
  • Freshmen Victoria Smirnov (9.850) and Mahleea Werline (9.825) each registered a career-best mark on bars.
  • As a team, the Broncos improved their scores from the Jan. 5 meet at Utah on bars, beam and floor.
  • Tonight's meet marked the first time ESPN Events owned and operated a gymnastics invitational. It was also the first NCAA Gymnastics competition to air nationally on the ACC Network.
What's Next
The Broncos return to the Treasure Valley for their first home competition of the season on Friday, Jan. 19. Boise State hosts MW members Air Force and San Jose, as well as nonconference opponent West Chester. The quad meet begins at 7 p.m. in ExtraMile Arena.
