Broncos Host Quad Meet for 2024 Home Opener

THE MEET:Â The Broncos return to the Treasure Valley for their first home competition of the season on Friday, Jan. 19. Boise State hosts MW members Air Force and San Jose State, as well as nonconference opponent West Chester. The quad meet begins at 7 p.m., in ExtraMile Arena.
MW WEEKLY AWARDS: Senior Emily Lopez, junior Emma Loyim and freshman Victoria Smirnov each earned a MW Specialist of the Week award following their performances in the first day of the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad. Lopez was named the Bars Specialist of the Week for the second week in a row, scoring a 9.900 to finish third in the event. Loyim was tabbed the Floor Specialist of the Week after scoring a career-high 9.950. Her performance tied the school record and won the event for the second time in her career. Smirnov was named Co-Freshman of the Week for earning a 9.850 on bars, collecting her first conference weekly accolade.
LAST TIME OUT:Â In the first day of the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad, Boise State gymnastics finished second at the nationally-televised event on Jan. 12. The Broncos scored a 196.250 to defeat No. 16 Nebraska (195.875) and No. 33 North Carolina (195.150), but were edged by Arizona (196.475). Junior Emma Loyim won floor with a score of 9.950, tying the program record and leading the Broncos to a meet-high rotation score of 49.425. Senior Emily Lopez led the bars lineup, tallying a 9.900 to place third. On beam, fifth-year senior Adriana Popp earned a team-high 9.875, finishing second. Popp and junior Alyssa Vulaj tied for second overall with a 9.850 on vault.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: Air Force came into the 2024 season earning votes in the WCGA Preseason Poll. The quad meet in Boise marks the first competition of the season for the Falcons. San Jose State entered 2024 expected to finish in second in the MW. The Spartans opened the season with the Mean Girls Super 16, competing against Denver, Illinois and Washington, scoring a 194.950. On Jan. 14, San Jose State won its dual against Sacramento State, posting a score of 194.950. West Chester opened the 2024 season with a trip to College Park, Md., to compete against Maryland on Jan. 12. The Golden Rams were defeated 196.150-193.775. The quad meet will mark Boise State and West Chester's first meeting.Â
