Broncos Drop First Game of the Season to No. 12 West Virginia

ESTERO, Fla. – Boise State women's basketball suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, losing to No. 12 West Virginia, 82-47, in the semifinal round of the Gulf Coast Showcase. 

The Mountaineers (8-0) won the game with its aggressive defense, holding the Broncos (7-1) to 31.4% shooting from the floor, their lowest performance of the season. West Virginia also forced 23 turnovers, leading to 27 points, and outscored Boise State 44-16 in the paint.

Mya Hansen hit an early 3-pointer to give the Broncos a brief 3-2 lead, but the Mountaineers responded with nine consecutive points to jump out to a 12-3 score. West Virginia created seven first quarter turnovers and held the Broncos to just 2-of-13 shooting (15.4%) from the field to create a 22-6 advantage after the first frame.

The Mountaineers grew their lead to 20 midway through the second quarter before Boise State settled in. Elodie Lalotte poured in eight points in the period, but West Virginia went into halftime holding on to a 45-23 advantage.

After a slow start coming out of the break, the Mountaineers ended the third quarter on a 13-3 run to take a 62-29 lead entering the final quarter. Teryn Gardner had a productive fourth frame, scoring all ten of her points in the final period for the Broncos.

- Elodie Lalotte finished with a team-high 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. The fifth year added five rebounds.
- Teryn Gardner recorded 10 points and two steals.
- Tatum Thompson recorded four points, five rebounds and four assists.

Notables
- The contest marks the highest-ranked team that Boise State has faced since competing against No. 8/9 Louisville on Nov. 24, 2019. The Cardinals won 98-82.
- The Broncos are 1-1 against Big 12 teams so far on the season. Boise State defeated Colorado 50-47 on Nov. 10.
- Boise State finished with 33 points from its reserves, marking five games with 30+ bench points on the season. The Broncos have scored 20+ bench points in all eight games.
- Abby Muse recorded three blocks in the game, finishing the contest with 286 career blocks. The Brentwood, Calif. native has doubled the amount of Stephanie Block (1996-2000), who is second in program history with 142 blocks.
- Freshman Teryn Gardner finished with 10 points, marking her third game scoring in double figures. Two of those games have come against Big 12 opponents.
- The loss marks the first loss of 30+ points since the Broncos lost 84-40 to BYU on Nov. 20, 2021.
