COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boise State senior pitcher Taylor Caudill and freshman outfielder Sophia Knight were honored by the Mountain West for their performances at the Kajikawa Classic in Arizona, Feb. 9-11.
Â
Caudill won the conference's pitcher of the week award while Knight was named both player and freshman of the week.
Â
A native of Mission Viejo, Calif., Caudill won each of her four appearances (three in relief) with a 0.33 ERA, 0.33 WHIP and 23 strikeouts in 21 innings. She retired 62 of 73 batters faced and only allowed four baserunners to reach second base.
Â
After earning victories against No. 20 Northwestern and St. Thomas, she picked up a third with 6 2/3 innings of shutout relief against Arizona State. The win was the second in school history on the road against a Power 5 opponent.
Â
Caudill capped the weekend with a five-hitter on the road against 2023 WAC champion Grand Canyon, handing the Lopes their first loss of 2024.
Â
Knight began her collegiate career in style, hitting safely out of the leadoff spot in each of Boise State's five games.
Â
She batted .632 with an .842 slugging percentage and 1.474 OPS. The Huntington Beach, Calif., product recorded three hits against St. Thomas, Wisconsin and Arizona State.
Â
At Grand Canyon, Knight collected the only two hits for the Broncos in a 3-1 victory. She registered team highs for runs (four) and doubles (two) and provided the only triple of the weekend for Boise State.
Â
Since the MW began awarding a freshman of the week honor in 2022, Boise State has the only two weekly sweeps in the conference. The other came April 25, 2023.
